Story: “Good People” Helping with Tornado Damage in Mississippi

January 2, 2011

This real story is written by Red Cross worker Tamica Smith-Jeuitt, from the Capital River Chapter.

New Years Eve Tornado in Mississippi
Bruce holds meals for his family provided by the Red Cross while thanking volunteer Lewis Herrington for the delivery.

“Good people” is what Bruce Ellington yelled out upon approaching Red Cross volunteers offering food and drinks to those living in the area affected by the New Year’s Eve tornado in Pearl.

“We really appreciate this”, he said referring to the two bags of meals that he was given to feed six others.

Ellington was left without power and a mound of debris around his home. He said for years tornadoes have passed over his neighborhood. He’s even watched images of devastation to nearby communities play out on TV over and over again, including pictures of the Red Cross doing their part to help. Unfortunately, this time Ellington needs the Red Cross. The good news is that he’s alive to tell how the Red Cross helped him.

“You all really do a good job. I know everything else is going to be fine for all of us,” said Ellington.
