Kenneths experience as Chaplain for the Memphis Fire Department, years as a Red Cross disaster responder and caring heart perfectly qualified him to provide emotional and spiritual care to people staying in Red Cross shelters in the Mid-South area. Kenneth respects all faith traditions as well as the absence of a tradition in his work for the Red Cross. He knows loss is a universal.

Red Cross Volunteers Visited by Laura Bush

May 19, 2010, Nashville, Tennessee – American Red Cross volunteers at Tennessee Flood headquarters in Nashville received a morale boost on Tuesday when Former First Lady Laura Bush visited and thanked them for their service and dedication. Mrs. Bush was accompanied by Karyn Frist, wife of former Senator Bill Frist.

Managers from Damage Assessment, Mass Care, Partner Services and Health Services provided overviews of the service and provided statistics on the services provided to Tennesseans who were affected by the massive flood.

Story: Nashville Residents Get Red Cross Help

This story was written by Red Cross worker Tammie Pech on May 16th, 2010.

On this hot, humid day, a week after the flooding, Cynthia Cyrus is taking a break from the work of cleaning up after the flood that hit her Nashville home. Sitting in the shade and looking over her yard full of belongings, she says very optimistically, “we are inventorying discoveries, not counting our losses.”

Just a couple of weeks after her husband returned from his second tour in Iraq, the flooding in Nashville ravished their home with 15 feet of water. “I was just glad he was home and I didn’t have to deal with this and three children alone,” Cynthia shared. When asked about all the volunteers and Red Cross workers helping her she said with a smile, “I am thrilled, it has become an instantaneous community and we feel blessed. Most people look at the gloom and doom, but we would rather see the brighter side of things.”
