Red Cross Responds to Senior High Rise Fire in Tampa

Tampa Bay, FL, October 4, 2010 – The Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to a senior citizen assisted living facility fire in Tampa over the weekend where two of the 80 units had major damage on the fifth floor. The rest of building and elevators had extensive water damage due to the sprinklers running long after the fire was extinguished.

The chapter’s Disaster Action Team (DAT) responded to the NAPFE Towers of Tampa National Alliance of Postal & Federal Employees) and volunteers opened a shelter at the Church of God of Prophecy and housed 21 evacuees overnight.

Disaster Health Services and Disaster Mental Health were in the shelter. The chapter provided a total of 135 meals and 155 snacks.

On Sunday, October 2, the shelter was closed when the facility’s property management provided hotel stays for all shelter residents and HartLine buses provided transportation. However, four residents required assistance at pet friendly shelters which the chapter covered. Caseworkers opened a total of 20 cases to provide clothing. Food assistance was provided to those in the pet friendly hotel. Others had food provided by property management via their hotel.

It has been a busy weekend for the Tampa Bay Chapter DAT volunteers. In the four days since October 1, the chapter has responded to a total of six incidents, 35 cases were opened, 52 clients were served and a total of $8,853 was spent.
