Disaster Alert
Texas – Red Cross teams are on site at the Tealwood on the Creek apartments in Dallas, Texas. A devastating fire has left 40 people in 18 units with nothing more than what they were wearing when they escaped the blaze. The City of Dallas send DART buses to the scene so that families could stay warm while getting help from the Red Cross.
So far, the Red Cross has made contact with 15 out of the 18 families and volunteers are assisting them with supplies from disaster relief vehicles including warm blankets, sweat suits, socks, shoes and hygiene supplies. Additionally, financial assistance is being given out so that families can go to Wal-Mart or Target and purchase new clothing and shoes, winter coats, groceries and other needed supplies.
Right now, the Red Cross is still working with the families and the property manager to determine if an overnight shelter will be needed for the displaced. An update will be provided later in the afternoon.

This story comes from Chicago, where the local chapter housed over 360 people in various shelters overnight on February 01, 2011.
Barbie lives in Wriglyville and teaches preschool in Hide Park. After school let out she got onto Lake Shore Drive like usual and it began to back up. As traffic moved slowly she turned on her turn signal and thought she exited onto Belmont but about a half an hour later she realized she had only made a lane change and was still on Lake Shore Drive. The white out was so bad that she had passed the Belmont exit. The cars ceased to move.
She was stalled on the roadway until about 1:30 a.m., at which point she began to see firemen coming to each car and rescuing people. They took her to a warming bus where she waited until about 4:00 a.m. From there she was transferred to another bus that took her and others who were stranded on Lake Shore Drive to the Red Cross shelter located at Malcom X college. Upon arrival at the shelter, she was offered water, coffee, blankets, food and a cot by the Red Cross volunteers.
“The experience itself was horrible but I cannot tell you how thankful I am that the Red Cross was there. I am still in awe about this whole experience, but the Red Cross support was the shining moment in my night.”

Disaster Alert
Texas – This message from Anita Foster, PIO, American Red Cross:
With freezing temperatures and power outages across the area, the Red Cross will be opening a Warming Center in Corsicana, Texas. Power outages have been widespread and ongoing throughout that area today so the Red Cross and the City of Corsicana want to provide this precautionary measure should anyone need electricity to meet special medical needs.
The Warming Center will open at NOON and will be located at Northside Baptist Church, 2800 N Beaton St, Corsicana, Texas. Again, this Warming Center is simply a precautionary measure at this time. We continue to stay in touch with emergency managers across the area. It appears that most power outages in the DFW area are short-lived and residents are holding up.
