Disaster Alert

Louisiana – Severe winter weather affected residents throughout the entire state on Thursday.

The Governor declared a State of Emergency.

Chapters initiated call downs and conducted state chapter conference calls to identify human and material resources, supported shelters, placed others on standby, communicated with emergency management and staffed Emergency Operation Centers on local and state levels.

Chapters continue to monitor the situation and remain on standby to provide additional assistance, if needed.


Disaster Alert: Severe Weather in Illinois

Disaster Alert

Illinois – A possible tornado or straight-line winds caused varying degrees of damage to homes and a 20-unit apartment complex in Beardstown yesterday.

The Central Prairie chapter opened a shelter last night and provided mass care. Initial Damage Assessment has begun. The Capital Area Chapter has an Emergency Response Vehicle on standby to provide mass care for the clean up crew.


Disaster Alert: Flooding and Severe Weather, Tornadoes in Texas

Disaster Alert

Texas – Heavy rain and severe weather affected many counties in multiple regions yesterday prompting evacuations. This weather system is expected to continue through tomorrow according to the National Weather Service.

The San Antonio Area chapter opened two shelters yesterday. Chapters are doing Damage Assessment in their respective areas. Additional assistance will be provided as needed.

A number of tornadoes reportedly touched down in Nome, Jefferson County yesterday resulting in damage to homes. Some clients are without power, water or sewer. Emergency Management reported three tornadoes caused the destruction.

The Beaumont Chapter is doing Damage Assessment and will provide additional assistance as needed.

Illinois – Severe weather continued in the state since Saturday and affected dozens of homes in Kankakee County.

The Kankakee Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team and provided individual assistance to affected-area residents.

Disaster Alert

South Dakota – Severe storms caused wind damage to homes and affected residents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Shannon County, SD on Monday.

The Black Hills Area Chapter provided immediate disaster assistance to two families. Tribal Law Enforcement, in partnership with the chapter, is completing Disaster Assessment. Additional services will be provided as requested.

Oklahoma – Severe storms, with golf ball sized hail, caused damage to homes and affected Oklahoma County residents late Sunday night. Multiple injuries reported.

The Central Oklahoma Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, and assessed disaster victims’ emergency needs.

Red Cross Launches Relief Efforts for Oklahoma Tornado
Responses Ongoing in Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, May 11, 2010 – From the plains of the Midwest to the deep south, the American Red Cross is providing a safe place to stay and relief supplies for thousands of people displaced by tornadoes and floods. Even as relief operations continue full force in Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama, the Red Cross has opened shelters in Oklahoma after last night’s tornadoes.

“These storms have left thousands across the country without homes; without any belongings,” said Joe Becker, Senior Vice President for Red Cross Disaster Services. “Our disaster teams are in the Midwest and across the South, and will be there for as long as it takes to help people get back on their feet.”

WASHINGTON, Monday, May 3, 2010—The American Red Cross has opened more than two dozen shelters in response to a powerful weather system that generated tornadoes and caused severe flooding across the South.

As of Monday morning, the Red Cross and its partners had 28 shelters open across the South, including Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee. Tennessee was particularly hard hit, with some areas in the state receiving as much as a foot of rain, leading to numerous road closures and forcing evacuations. Nearly 1,000 Tennesseans stayed at a shelter on Sunday night.

“We’re just at the beginning of this relief operation, and until the water begins to recede we won’t know just how much damage has occurred,” said Joe Becker, senior vice president of disaster services at the Red Cross. “Right now we’re focused on providing meals and a safe place to stay, but the Red Cross will be there for the long haul to help people get back on their feet.”

Disaster Alert: Severe Weather in South Carolina

Disaster Alert

South Carolina – Severe thunderstorms and a tornado caused damage to several homes in Lexington County and left hundreds of residents in Aiken, Florence and Spartanburg Counties without power on Monday.

The Coastal South Carolina Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team (DAT) and worked with disaster victims to determine emergency needs.
