Greensboro Red Cross to Open Emergency Shelter for those affected by Power Outages and Winter Storm

GREENSBORO, NC March 2, 2009 -Due to an extensive power outage in the aftermath of yesterday’s snow storm, your Greensboro Chapter of the American Red Cross, in collaboration with the City of Greensboro, Guilford County Departments of Emergency Management, Public Health and Social Services, will open an emergency shelter at Glenwood Recreation Center at 6:00pm tonight (Monday, March 2, 2009).

Glenwood Recreation Center is located at 20-10 Coliseum Boulevard in Greensboro. It is open to those affected by this disaster needing a meal and emergency shelter and will remain open as needed. Shelter residents are asked to bring any necessary medicines, provisions for special dietary needs, formula and diapers for infants, a pillow and blanket for each member of the family, a change of clothing, and books and simple toys for children.

If the Power Goes Out:
• Do not use candles for lighting if the power goes out. Use flashlights only.
• Use items in the refrigerator first, then freezer, then non-perishable foods.
• Use generators correctly – If you have a portable generator and the power goes out, always plan to keep the generator outdoors. Never operate it inside, including the basement, garage, carport or near any open windows. Connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not hook up a generator directly to your home’s wiring.
