Red Cross Flood Shelter Locations Updates

WILMINGTON NC, September 30, 2010 – As damage from heavy rain remains a threat to areas of the Cape Fear region, the American Red Cross will continue to shelter residents displaced from their homes due to flooding. Three school shelters were opened yesterday evening and are now closed: North Brunswick High School and West Brunswick High School shelters closed at 11am on 9/30 and Eaton Elementary School in New Hanover County closed at 8am on 9/30.

The Red Cross will be opening the following shelters:

Brunswick County
First Baptist Church – 517 Village Rd., Leland NC 28451 – Opens at 2:00PM on 9/30

New Hanover County
First Baptist Activity Center – 1939 Independence Blvd., Wilmington NC 28403 – Opens at 2:00PM on 9/30

Pender County
Burgaw Middle School – 500 S Wright St., Burgaw NC 28425 – Opens at 12:00PM on 9/30

Personal items to bring with you to the shelter should include any medicines needed by members of the family, feeding formulas and diapers for infants, a pillow and blanket for each member of the family, a change of clothing, and books and simple toys for your children.
Public health requirements do not permit us to accept pets in these shelters. Please contact your local animal control department for more information about shelter options for your pet.


Disaster Alert: Wildfire in North Carolina

Disaster Alert

North Carolina – A forest fire in Duplin and Onslow Counties prompted the evacuation of residents within the affected area on Thursday.

The Onslow County Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, opened a shelter and provided Mass Care for evacuees. Shelter closed hours later.

Disaster Alert: Industrial Fire in North Carolina

Disaster Alert

North Carolina – Lightning struck a gasoline company in Greensboro early this morning setting one gas tank on fire. Firefighters are letting the fire burn itself out for now according to news media. Several Interstates and roads around the incident are closed. There are no evacuations necessary at this time and no injuries reported.

The Greensboro Chapter’s Mass Care team fed about 200 Emergency Response personnel.

North Carolina – A tornado touched down in Hoke County damaging homes and causing the evacuation of dozens of residents in the affected area on Sunday.

The Highlands Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, opened a shelter and provided assistance to the affected-area residents.

North Carolina – An Amtrak train traveling from Raleigh to Charlotte crashed in Alamance County on Thursday. Multiple injuries were reported.

The ARC of the Quad Cities Area Chapter The Piedmont Carolina Chapter deployed Red Cross workers to provide canteen services to scores of emergency responders.

Red Cross Provides Comfort for Storm Victims

TRIAD, March 30, 2010 – Your Red Cross remains on the scene throughout High Point and Davidson County providing food, shelter and counseling to those affected by the aftermath of the devastating tornadoes. We are coordinating with local emergency officials and our community partners to best serve those in need.

An emergency shelter is open at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 279 Eastchester Drive in High Point, to help residents impacted by the storm by offering a safe place to stay, a hot meal, minor first aid, and a shoulder to lean on. Last night, we sheltered 5 individuals affected by the storms. As a result of damage assessment and best serving our client’s needs, this shelter will close at Noon, Wednesday, March 31.

Red Cross volunteers have completed damage assessment in these impacted areas. Caseworkers will meet with families at the shelter and at the High Point-Thomasville Chapter, located at 815 Phillips Avenue starting at 1pm today.

North Carolina – A tornado that touched down in Guilford and Davidson Counties damaged homes, caused power outages and prompted the evacuation of residents in the affected area on Sunday.

The High Point – Thomasville Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team (DAT), opened 2 shelters and provided canteen services to emergency responders and disaster victims.

Virginia – A tornado touched down in Halifax County damaged homes, caused power outages and prompted the evacuation of residents in the affected area on Sunday.

The Halifax County Chapter deployed a DAT, opened a shelter and worked with affected-area residents to determine emergency needs.
