CBS News Helps Red Cross Transport Blood into Haiti

• The American Red Cross needed help getting blood into Haiti this week and CBS News flew to the rescue.

• The United Nations Mission Hospital in Haiti requested blood products from the Red Cross to help treat victims of the earthquake.

• CBS News had chartered a plane to take their staff and equipment into Haiti and agreed to carry four boxes of Red Cross blood with them.

• The CBS crew and their precious Red Cross cargo arrived in Port au Prince on Thursday.

• The blood was delivered to waiting United Nations personnel upon arrival and brought directly to the hospital where staff started using it almost immediately.

• The delivery of this Red Cross blood by CBS News was truly a lifesaving gift.

In Haiti, the local Red Cross worked throughout the night to rescue people from their trapped homes and provide first aid.

· Priority needs now are food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.


Earthquake in Haiti: Situational Update #5

January 13, 2010

The American Red Cross is contributing an initial $1 million to support the relief operation.

  • We committed $200,000 last night, and increased that amount this morning to $1 million.
  • The American Red Cross also is releasing supplies from our warehouse in Panama that will be able to meet the immediate needs of 5,000 families. Included are tarps, mosquito nets and cooking sets.
  • The American Red Cross is deploying six disaster management specialists to the disaster zone to help coordinate relief. These join the staff we already have on the ground there.

Disaster Alert: Train Incident in South Carolina

Disaster Alert

South Carolina –  A 10-car train, that carried hazardous materials, overturned in Lexington County and prompted the evacuation of local residents on Sunday, November 20. The evacuation was issued as a precaution in case of a spill.

Central South Carolina chapter deployed Disaster Action Team (DAT) and temporarily opened a shelter for the evacuees while cars were being placed back on tracks.

October is Fire Prevention Month so we though we’d show you exactly how many fires we responded to this year and give you some tips for preventing a fire in your own home.

This map illustrates the 63,111 home fires your American Red Cross chapters responded to in our Fiscal Year 2009. We’ve broken down the data by chapter, and it’s really quite stunning.

Thank you all for supporting your local chapters as they arrive on the scene, often in the middle of the night, to these silent events that affect thousands of families each year.
