YAPHANK, N.Y., Sept. 3, 2010 – Governor David A. Paterson thanked American Red Cross volunteers Friday afternoon for their efforts to prepare Long Island for Hurricane Earl’s approach. At a press conference in the agency’s operations center, Paterson praised them,

“Not just for their response to this disaster but for all the months of work and training and preparedness that make it easy.”

The response on Long Island is being led by Robert Imbornoni, the chief response officer for the Metropolitan New York Chapters. Imbornoni credited the success of the effort to years of hard work and coordination between the local chapters. The disaster relief operation headquarters was established adjacent to the Suffolk County Chapter’s offices. Volunteers from throughout the region—Suffolk, Nassau County, and Greater New York—are leading the response with some volunteers coming from as far as Chicago.

And though most of Long Island seems to have dodged a bullet thanks to Earl shifting east, the Red Cross remains on the job. A shelter is open in Montauk, a small village located on the easternmost point of the island that is being pounded by heavy surf and rain. Coastal flooding remains a concern across the island as the storm passes.

“We will be here as long as we are needed,” stated Imbornoni.

On the Scene: Yazoo City Tornado

Katrina Fennell says she is thankful for the night she and her 9-year-old daughter Lily spent in a Red Cross shelter in Yazoo City.  The shelter is located about 4 miles from their home that was destroyed by a tornado, but that’s not all they lost in the storm.  Their uncle, 48- year-old Carlton Gould was killed when high winds tossed him while inside of his camper trailer home.

Thanks to a phone call warning Fennell to leave, she escaped with ten children.  She recalls seeing from the rear view mirror of her car the debris flying around as she sped away.

“I think that was when the tornado hit” she said, “it was around ten minutes after the call.”

She went to another family member’s home for safety and that evening to the Red Cross shelter.  There was plenty of food, water, and a snack for the Fennell’s when they arrived. Red Cross workers even had books and games for Lily. She and her mother smiled. Lily’s was the biggest.

“This is good for tonight, thank you,” said Fennell referring to cots the family pulled together to get some rest.

March 24, 2010

Since the earthquake struck in Haiti on January 12, the American Red Cross has raised approximately $369 million. We have spent or allocated $106.4 million in the areas of food and water, shelter, and health and family services.

People in Haiti will receive immediate relief and resources, as well as the necessary support and training to help them recover and rebuild. We are committed to providing assistance quickly, but with a thoughtful and well-planned approach that ensures the best service to meet long-term needs for recovery. The Red Cross is working closely with the Government of Haiti, the World Bank, the UN and others to ensure that relief and recovery work is done in a coordinated, comprehensive and sustainable way.
