Disaster Update: NYC Storm Response

September 21, 2010

Disaster Update

National Weather Service meteorologists confirmed that last week’s fierce storm that tore through NYC in a matter of minutes hit both Brooklyn and Queens as a tornado with 80 mph and 100 mph winds respectively. The storm swept through the north shore of Staten Island, Park Slope, Brooklyn, and parts of Flushing, Bayside and Forest Hills, Queens, downing approximately 1,100 trees, causing extensive damage to cars and buildings, and leaving more than 45,000 people without power.

Since the storm battered the city on September 16, Chapter relief workers have registered 154 people (132 adults and 22 children) in all three affected boroughs (Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn) for Red Cross services. In total, 16 households (30 adults and 10 children) forced to vacate their homes or whose homes suffered extensive damage received emergency housing and/or emergency financial assistance for food and clothing from the NY Red Cross. Chapter responders are currently working with displaced residents registered for assistance to get them on the road to recovery by providing them with referrals to city agencies that can help meet their longer term needs.

Because emergencies can happen at any time, with little or no warning, the NY Red Cross continues to urge everyone to be prepared before the next emergency or disaster strikes. Be Red Cross Ready by taking 3 simple steps: Get a Kit, Make a Plan and Be Informed.

Press Release: NY Red Cross Assists Residents After Fierce Storm Sweeps Through NYC

NY Red Cross Assists Residents After Fierce Storm Sweeps Through NYC

September 17, 2011 – A violent storm, carrying the hallmarks of a tornado, with close to 100 mile an hour winds, swept through New York City around 5:30 last night, leaving downed trees, roofs blown clear off houses, and debris strewn across neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. NY Red Cross relief workers immediately responded to help affected residents in all three boroughs. Additionally, the Chapter activated its Brooklyn, Bronx, and Manhattan Disaster Action Teams (DATs) and placed its Queens and Staten Island DATs on standby to provide support as necessary, or to open a Red Cross shelter if the need arose.

The Chapter registered a total of 63 people (50 adults and 13 children) throughout the affected areas for Red Cross services, which can include emergency funds for food, clothing and other basic necessities. Temporary housing was required for four households (10 adults and 6 children) in Brooklyn, one of the worst hit areas.

Red Cross responders continue to work with displaced residents registered for assistance to determine their immediate needs, and are in the process of conducting further damage assessment throughout the affected areas to determine additional needs for emergency care and assistance.

“This storm blew through the city in mere minutes, leaving an amazing amount of destruction behind,” said Chief Response Officer Bob Imbornoni. “Mother Nature can turn one’s life upside down in a New York minute, which is why the NY Red Cross urges everyone to be prepared before an emergency or disaster occurs.” Be Red Cross Ready by taking 3 simple steps: Get a Kit, Make a Plan and Be Informed.

Governor David Paterson Visits Long Island Red Cross Operation

YAPHANK, N.Y., Sept. 3, 2010 – Governor David A. Paterson thanked American Red Cross volunteers Friday afternoon for their efforts to prepare Long Island for Hurricane Earl’s approach. At a press conference in the agency’s operations center, Paterson praised them,

“Not just for their response to this disaster but for all the months of work and training and preparedness that make it easy.”

The response on Long Island is being led by Robert Imbornoni, the chief response officer for the Metropolitan New York Chapters. Imbornoni credited the success of the effort to years of hard work and coordination between the local chapters. The disaster relief operation headquarters was established adjacent to the Suffolk County Chapter’s offices. Volunteers from throughout the region—Suffolk, Nassau County, and Greater New York—are leading the response with some volunteers coming from as far as Chicago.

And though most of Long Island seems to have dodged a bullet thanks to Earl shifting east, the Red Cross remains on the job. A shelter is open in Montauk, a small village located on the easternmost point of the island that is being pounded by heavy surf and rain. Coastal flooding remains a concern across the island as the storm passes.

“We will be here as long as we are needed,” stated Imbornoni.

Press Release: Long Island’s Red Cross Chapters Are Ready for Earl

September 1, 2010

Long Island’s Red Cross Chapters Are Ready for Earl

FARMINGDALE, N.Y., Sept. 1, 2010 – The affect Hurricane Earl may have on Long Island is yet to be seen; however, the Nassau and Suffolk County Chapters of the American Red Cross announced at a press conference today that they are ready.

Working together, the chapters have pre-positioned cots, blankets and other supplies at 50 locations that could serve as shelters during a disaster, providing refuge for nearly 60,000 residents. Besides assuring residents that the Red Cross is prepared, representatives took the opportunity to encourage Long Islanders to examine their own plans.

“While we hope that the storm will veer away, hope is no substitute for preparedness,” said Frank Cassano, chief executive officer of the Nassau County Red Cross.

The Red Cross was joined at the conference by Michael Hervey, the Long Island Power Authority’s chief operating officer. Hervey spoke about the possibility of power outages—reinforcing the importance of having supplies like water, non-perishable food, flashlights and radios at home. Also in attendance was Frank Palma of Coca Cola Enterprises. The company’s Hauppauge-based plant has bottled water loaded and ready to ship to Red Cross shelters if needed.

To learn more about hurricane preparedness, Long Islanders can visit www.liprepares.org.
