Disaster Update

Cold weather continues to affect residents in different parts of the southern region and is forecast to continue through the coming weekend. Chapters have opened shelters and warming centers due to the continued freezing temperatures affecting the South.

Residents without means to stay warm overnight are encouraged to go to a nearby shelter. Call your local chapter for the latest information on shelter openings.

Disaster Alert

Florida – Cold weather continues to affect the local residents in Palm Beach and Martin Counties on Monday. The Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter has a shelter open for the affected-area residents and provided Mass Care (MC). The Martin County Chapter has a shelter open and provided MC to shelter residents.

Louisiana – Cold weather in Saint Tammany and Washington Parishes affected local area residents on Monday. The Southeast Louisiana Chapter opened a shelter to provide assistance for the affected-area residents as part of a Freeze Plan.

Mississippi – Frigid temperatures in Harrison and Hancock Counties affected local area residents on Monday. The Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter opened two shelters for residents in the affected area and provided MC.


Update on Flood in Louisiana

Disaster Update

Updated Dec. 18th: The Southeast Louisiana Chapter is continuing to work throughout St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, Lafourche, Terrebonne and St. Mary parishes to assist those affected by the recent flooding. The Lafourche Parish shelter is currently operating with 27 registered residents. This shelter will remain open as long as needed. The Chapter has distributed a total of 170 clean up kits, fed 276 meals and 552 snacks since the flooding began.

Rain continues throughout many area parishes resulting in the closure of some roads because of flooding. Schools in Jefferson and St. Charles Parishes are closed and sandbagging operations are ongoing in many areas. Eleven homes were flooded in four parishes and sewer systems throughout the parishes are backed up. Some customers are without power. The shelter had an overnight population of 27.

Disaster Alert: Flood in Louisiana

Disaster Alert

Louisiana – Heavy rain yesterday resulted in major road and highway flooding throughout Lafourche and St. Charles Parishes. Many houses throughout the area reportedly had water in them. The full extent of damage is not yet known. St. Charles and Lafourche Parish Emergency Operations Centers (EOC) are staffed. The Southeast Louisiana Chapter Disaster Management Team has been activated; two shelters were open yesterday with an overnight population of 22. Damage Assessment and Clean Up Kit distribution is planned to start this morning as roads are clear.


Floods / Tornadoes in Georgia, Florida, Louisiana

Disaster Alert

Georgia - Flooding in Chattooga County on Wednesday prompted the evacuation of residents within the affected area. The Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter and Coosa Valley Chapter deployed Disaster Action Teams (DAT) and opened a shelter for the evacuees.

In an unrelated incident, a tornado touched down and caused damage in Wayne County.  One injury was reported. The Savannah Chapter and Southeastern Coastal Georgia Chapter deployed a DAT and provided individual assistance to disaster victims.

Florida – A tornado that touched down in Leon County caused damages to homes, trees and transportation on Wednesday. The Northeast Florida Chapter and Capital Area Chapter deployed DATs and provided individual assistance to disaster victims.

Louisiana – Flooding in Assumption, St. John, and Arcadia Parishes damaged homes, affected others and made roads inaccessible on Wednesday. The Louisiana Capital Area Chapter deployed DAT, supplied bulk distribution, and identified a shelter, if needed.

Disaster Alert: Severe Weather in Louisiana

Disaster Alert

Louisiana – A severe storm system throughout the region caused a tornado to touch down damaging homes and affecting dozens of others in Bossier Parrish Thursday night. The Northwest Louisiana Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team (DAT), opened a shelter, staffed the county Emergency Operations Center (EOC); and partnered with a local vendor to provide food and drinks. The Central Louisiana Chapter provided individual assistance to those affected in the area.


Southeast Floods: Volunteer Experience

Chris Meinzen from the Southeast Louisiana Red Cross chapter is deployed to help the flood operation in Georgia.

Collins and I reached the neighborhood, and people were waiting in the street for the next feeding ERV. We talked to people, we told them when help was coming, we told them what we could do. We spoke in Spanish and we used our knowledge to put them at ease. Later, driving through another neighborhood, I handed a Cleanup Kit to a man standing in his garage surrounded by his belongings. We talked for ten minutes.

Louisiana – Severe weather in Terrebonne Parish damaged homes yesterday. The Southeast Louisiana chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team (DAT) and provided emergency assistance to the disaster victims.


Disaster Alert: Chemical Leak in Louisiana

Disaster Alert

Louisiana – A chemical leak from a tank at the Dow Chemical Plant in Hahnville caused a local voluntary evacuation order. The Southeast Louisiana chapter opened a shelter and provided snacks and beverages to emergency responders. The chapter shelter support trailer was placed at the shelter and staff were on call through the night.
