Disaster Alert: Flood in Texas

Disaster Alert

Texas – Severe weather caused flooding in Medina County that damaging homes on Saturday.

The San Antonio Area Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team (DAT), contacted local emergency management, dispatched Emergency Response Vehicles and provided bulk distribution to residents in the affected area.

The Corpus Christi Chapter contacted local emergency management.

The Crossroads Chapter deployed DAT and provided bulk distribution to flood victims.

Story: Pizza Hut Helps American Red Cross Feed Tennesseans

Calista Warrick, 4, of Nunnelly, Tenn., is happy to American Red Cross came around with food for the victims of the flooding in Tennessee.

Pizza Hut played a large role in helping the American Red Cross feed hundreds of individuals and families in Nashville over the past couple of days. NPC International, the largest franchisee of Pizza Hut around the world, saw a need to help the families in the Nashville, TN, area. Most had lost electrical power and telephones, and the hardest hit were driven from their homes and apartments by record flooding around the massive Cumberland River and some of its feeder tributaries.

“But,” explained Kirby Mynier, Vice President of Operations, East Territory, based in Brentwood, TN, “we didn’t have any kind of distribution network. We knew we had to do something and with a massive mobile pizza oven, available, we had the capability to turn out a large number of pizzas for those affected people.”

Red Cross Relief Efforts Continue

Volunteers Deliver Hope and Help in Flood Affected Communities

(MURFREESBORO) May 4, 2010 – Heart of Tennessee Chapter Volunteers have been canvassing affected communities in LaVergne today doing damage assessment and to deliver water, snacks, comfort kits and clean-up kits with supplies to help local residents in their flood clean-up efforts. Red Cross comfort kits include basic necessities such as soap, a comb, razor, shampoo, washcloth etc. Clean-up kits are designed to help residents clean up their homes after any major disaster and include a mop, bucket, bleach, gloves, a sponge and other basic cleaning items.

“When you lose everything in a disaster, such as a flood, you realize how important it is to have to basic cleaning items not only for your home, but for yourself and your family as well,” said Heart of Tennessee Chapter Emergency Services Director, Brian Toll.

Press Release: American Red Cross Responds to Historic Southern Floods

People can send a $10 donation to help those affected by disasters across the country by texting ‘REDCROSS’ to 90999

WASHINGTON, Monday, May 3, 2010—The American Red Cross has opened more than two dozen shelters in response to a powerful weather system that generated tornadoes and caused severe flooding across the South.

As of Monday morning, the Red Cross and its partners had 28 shelters open across the South, including Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee. Tennessee was particularly hard hit, with some areas in the state receiving as much as a foot of rain, leading to numerous road closures and forcing evacuations. Nearly 1,000 Tennesseans stayed at a shelter on Sunday night.

“We’re just at the beginning of this relief operation, and until the water begins to recede we won’t know just how much damage has occurred,” said Joe Becker, senior vice president of disaster services at the Red Cross. “Right now we’re focused on providing meals and a safe place to stay, but the Red Cross will be there for the long haul to help people get back on their feet.”

In the wake of the devastation cause by recent domestic disasters, including the tornadoes and flooding in the southern US, mGive has once again donated their services, enabling the Red Cross to accept text donations for the Disaster Relief Fund.
