Colorado Red Cross Responding to Multiple Incidents, Setting up 2 Evacuation Points

March 21, 2011 – The American Red Cross Mile High Chapter has opened two separate evacuation points in response to simultaneous fires in Jefferson County; meanwhile, the Red Cross is also responding to a house fire in Aurora.

The evacuation points are:

Evergreen High School – for evacuees of the Evergreen Fire, to be staffed and open by 4:30 p.m.

First United Methodist Church, 1500 Ford St. in Golden – for evacuees of the Indian Gulch fire; be staffed and open by 4:30 p.m.

A Disaster Action Team is also responding to a single family house fire on North Scranton St. in Aurora. One person estimated displaced.

More information will be released as it becomes available.

Georgia – A forest fire in McIntosh County prompted the evacuation of about ten families yesterday.

The Savannah Chapter opened a comfort station for the evacuees and provided mass care.


Disaster Alert: Wildfire in Florida

Disaster Alert

Florida – A fast moving fire in Volusia, Seminole and Brevard counties prompted the evacuation of many homes yesterday. The fire is only 20% to 25% contained.

The Space Coast Chapter opened a shelter at the request of the Brevard County Emergency Management and placed another on standby. Chapter served meals and snacks from an Emergency Response Vehicle. A Disaster Health Services nurse was present for special needs evacuees.

Chapter closed the shelter later.

Florida – A large brush fire in Brevard and Volusia Counties burned thousands of acres, closed roads, and threatened local area residents on Monday.

Disaster Action Team members from the Space Coast Chapter opened two shelters and provided Mass Care to evacuees and emergency responders.

Fires Leave 3 Families Homeless – Mt. Baker Red Cross Responds

WHATCOM/SKAGIT COUNTIES – The Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to two major fires on February 25 which destroyed one home and two apartment units.

Two families lost everything in the Everson apartment fire. The Red Cross provided both families with Client Assistance Cards which are used to purchase groceries, food, shoes, and seasonal clothing. They also received comfort kits containing personal hygiene items and toys for the children.

The second fire on February 25 was in Mount Vernon. A single family residence was destroyed when the homeowner attempted to thaw pipes under the house with a propane heater. Like those in Everson, the family received a Client Assistance Card and comfort kits from the Red Cross. They are also getting help from their neighbors, including temporary shelter in a vacant house for no charge.

“The community really poured out the support for the family,” said Dwayne Campbell, one of the Red Cross volunteers who responded to the scene. “They are helpful and well-liked in the neighborhood.”

The Triangle Area Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team and provided Mass Care to emergency responders.


Disaster Alert: Wildfire in Virginia

Disaster Alert

Virginia – High wind gusts and low humidity caused wildfires that burned thousands of acres, damaged homes and structures, left hundreds of residents without power and prompted evacuations on Saturday. Local State of Emergency declared in 7 counties.

The ARC Top of Virginia Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team and opened a shelter for evacuees. The shelter closed hours later with no residents.

Disaster Action Team members from the Central Virginia Chapter opened a shelter, placed additional staff on standby and provided Mass Care for evacuees.

Washington – A wildfire on an Indian reservation in Yakima County damaged dozens of homes, threatened hundreds of others, closed roads, caused power outages and prompted the evacuation of scores of residents within the affected area on Saturday. Minor injuries reported.

Disaster Action Team members from the Yakima Valley Chapter opened a shelter, provided Mass Care, and offered assistance, as needed to affected-area residents.

American Red Cross Helps 30 Residents Following Devastating Explosion and Fire in Allentown, Pa.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2011) – The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley continued its efforts today to help 13 families left homeless by last night’s explosion and fire in the 500 and 600 blocks of N. 13th Street in Allentown.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in this devastating event,” said John R. Hughes, executive director of the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley. “In a tight-knit community as ours, we all share the heartbreak that this tragedy brings.” Red Cross mental health volunteers are working closely with the families.

As of 4:15 p.m., 13 families (28 adults and two children) received assistance for lodging, food, clothing, shoes, medication replacement, blankets, toiletry items, seasonal garments and referrals for other resources. All disaster assistance is free and is provided through financial donations by the general public. The cost to shelter, feed, clothe, and provide shoes and winter garments for one adult is about $400.
