Disaster Alert: Transportation Incident / Multi Family Fire in New Jersey

April 20, 2010

Disaster Alert

New Jersey – Hundreds of travelers were stranded at Newark’s Liberty Airport since Saturday due to the volcanic activity in Iceland that cancelled thousands of international flights worldwide.

The ARC of Northern New Jersey Chapter worked closely with Continental Airlines and the Port Authority to provide assistance for the travelers in the form of 200 cots, 200 blankets and 300 comfort kits. They will continue assistance until flights return to normal.

In a separate incident, a large four-alarm fire in Union City, NJ destroyed 2 buildings, damaged 2 others and prompted the evacuation of dozens of local residents on Sunday.

The Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, worked with the city to house displaced residents in hotels and provided food and clothing to disaster victims.


Disaster Alert: Tornado in Florida

Florida – A tornado that touched down in Gadsden County damaged homes and left local residents without power on Friday.

The Capital Area Chapter deployed two Disaster Action Teams and provided assistance to disaster victims, as needed.


Disaster Alert: Explosion in West Virginia

Disaster Alert

West Virginia – An explosion caused a mine to collapse near the Raleigh / Boone County border on Monday. Dozens of fatalities, multiple injuries and 4 missing reported.

The Central West Virginia Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, which included Mental Health, Health Services and Public Affairs. They also dispatched two Emergency Response Vehicles, provided canteen services and communicated with local and state government agencies to determine appropriate level of support to the victims and families of the deceased.

National Headquarters dispatched a Advanced Public Affairs Team and will continue to monitor situation and provide additional resources as needed.

New Jersey Floods 2010
Red Cross Volunteers Barbara and Mark Nowakowski unload a clean-up kit from an ERV in Manville, New Jersey.

The American Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) came to a halt in front of a blue house in a Middlesex, New Jersey neighborhood. Through the attached loudspeaker a voice could be heard, “The American Red Cross is passing out snacks, water and clean-up kits. If you would like water, snacks or clean-up kits, please come out to the Red Cross truck.” The same message was repeated once more, the calm voice complimenting the chirping birds located in nearby oak trees.

Mark Nowakowski was sitting in the driver’s seat, the microphone held in his right hand. Waiting patiently for residents affected by recent flooding, Mark and his wife, Barbara, debated over whether or not they should continue further up the road. After a few minutes passed, Mark released the brake and headed towards 7th Street.
