Disaster Alert

Indiana / Illinois / Missouri / Ohio / Kansas / Michigan / Arkansas / Nebraska / Wisconsin – A massive winter storm affected several states throughout the central states with heavy snow, ice, severe thunderstorms and gusty winds that closed roads, cancelled thousands of flights, stranded travelers and left millions of residents without power on Tuesday.

A State of Emergency was declared for Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Chapters deployed Disaster Action Team members, opened or supported at least 51 shelters, placed others on standby, dispatched Emergency Response Vehicles, provided Mass Care, communicated with local and state emergency management and staffed Emergency Operation Centers on local and state levels.


Disaster Alert: Explosion in New York

Disaster Alert

New York – A house exploded in the town of Horseheads resulting in three injuries and the evacuation of eight homes yesterday.

The Southern Tier chapter’s Disaster Action Team conducted a Disaster Assessment and provided Mass Care to the affected residents and first responders.

Florida – Below average temperatures affected dozens of residents within Indian River County on Thursday.

The North Treasure Coast Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, opened a shelter and provided Mass Care to dozens of shelter residents.


Disaster Alert: Snowstorm in Pennsylvania/ Massachusetts/ New York/ New Jersey/ Rhode Island/ Connecticut

Disaster Alert

A winter storm brought snow, high winds and coastal flooding throughout several portions of the states that stranded
travelers and left thousands of residents within the affected areas without power on Sunday. Governors declared a State of Emergency in Massachusetts and New Jersey.

All chapters within the impacted areas conducted call downs of volunteers and CEO’s were apprised.

The ARC of Northeastern New York Chapter staffed the state EOC to provide assistance as needed.

The ARC of Massachusetts Bay Chapter and placed shelters staffed the state EOC on stand-by for affected-area residents.

Disaster Action Team members from the ARC of Northern New Jersey Chapter collaborated with emergency management to open two shelters and provided Mass Care for scores of stranded travelers.

The Rhode Island Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team, staffed EOC, opened a shelter and placed other shelters on stand-by for affected-area residents. Disaster Action Team members from the Connecticut Chapter supported a shelter for residents affected by the storm


Disaster Alert: Flood and Snowstorm in Utah

Disaster Alert

Utah – A strong storm system caused flooding in parts of Washington, Kane and Garfield counties, forcing the evacuation of about 280 residents in Rockville. Iron and Beaver counties reported two feet of snow within a six hour timeframe yesterday.

The State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated at level 3 and various county Emergency Operations Centers are activated.

The Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter opened a reception center and placed a Disaster Action Team on standby. They are in communication with the State EOC.

The Chapter continues to monitor the situation and update the Disaster Operations Center as needed.


Disaster Alert: Multi Family Fire in Norwalk

Disaster Alert

Connecticut – The American Red Cross is helping 17 people – 11 adults and six children – in six families after a multi-family fire in Norwalk on Ely Avenue.

The Connecticut Chapter provided temporary lodging to all six families and provided financial assistance for emergency clothing and food needs to three families whose units suffered more extensive damage.

The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits, containing age and gender appropriate personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. Children’s’ kits include coloring supplies and a stuffed toy.

The comfort kits are assembled and donated by Clean Sweep Restoration Services of New England, LLC, an emergency clean-up and restoration services company located in Wallingford, Connecticut. Clean Sweep has been building and donating kits to the Red Cross in Connecticut for more than a year, making them available for the Red Cross to use in the nearly 500 fires it responds to each year.

Idaho – A windstorm damaged 30 homes in Kamiah, ID yesterday.

The ARC of Greater Idaho Chapter is working with the local tribe to determine what type of assistance to provide to affected residents. Volunteers have been placed on alert to open a shelter if needed.


Disaster Alert: Tornadoes in Virginia

Disaster Alert

Virginia – Tornadoes touched down in Henrico and Hanover Counties near Richmond yesterday downing trees and power lines and affecting several homes and businesses.

The Greater Richmond chapter completed a preliminary damage assessment. Chapter is working closely with local emergency managers to monitor the situation.


Disaster Alert: Flooding in Texas

Texas – Flooding affected homes and prompted the evacuations of local residents in Hudspeth County on Wednesday.

The El Paso Area Chapter communicated with local Emergency Management and will assess the affected-area resident’s emergency needs today.


Disaster Alert: Train Derailment in Louisiana

Disaster Alert

Louisiana – Volunteer members of the American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter Disaster Action Team (DAT) are currently responding to a train derailment at the intersection of Becky Lane and Madewood Drive in Destrehan. Volunteers are providing drinks and snacks for the first responders and a staff member is in the St. Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The Southeast Louisiana Chapter will continue to work with St. Charles Parish and support them as this emergency continues.
