Red Cross Continues to Assist After Florida Tornadoes
Central Florida, April 3, 2011 – American Red Cross volunteers canvassed areas throughout three counties today to survey damage and offer assistance to people affected by the March 31 storms that produced nine tornadoes.
To date, throughout Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, Red Cross Disaster Assessment teams found:
- 9 homes destroyed
- 65 homes with major damage
- 67 homes with minor damage
- 129 homes affected
- 85 homes inaccessible
Twenty-six client assistance cases have been opened.
The Interbay area of Tampa still has neighborhoods that are completely inaccessible to Red Cross Disaster Assessment teams. Safety factors are an issue as power companies are working to replace poles and restore power to the area. An estimated 85 homes are in the area, an unknown number of which may be damaged or residents otherwise affected. Teams plan on again attempting to gain access on Monday morning to assess the damage and residents’ needs.
Volunteers in Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles (ERV’s), chapter vans and some on foot, met with residents in three Pinellas mobile home parks today giving out water, snacks, sandwiches and providing emergency assistance to everyone in need.
Neighbors helping neighbors seems to have become the motto of communities across the bay. The Progress Village area in Hillsborough County and Four Seasons Estates in Pinellas County are the shining examples of humanitarian kindness and generosity. Many have opened their homes to neighbors who have been forced out by the destruction of the storms. Children continue to help elderly neighbors. Teenagers are clearing fallen trees and a neighbor down the street is preparing sandwiches.
To date, Red Cross has provided:
