Photos: Tornadoes in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi
May 4, 2010Severe thunderstorms have recently reaped havoc throughout much of the southern United States. As deadly tornadoes have touched down in Arkansas and Mississippi, the American Red Cross has responded providing food, shelter and comfort to disaster victims.
Local residents like Candie Miralrio of Albertville, AL lend a helping hand to Red Cross volunteers as they distribute relief and clean-up supplies throughout their damaged communities.

Tracy Reines, Director of the International Response Center, provides a weekend update of American Red Cross relief operations in the Asia Pacific region. Ongoing recovery efforts continue in the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Samoa and American Samoa as a major typhoon, earthquakes and a tsunami ravaged the area this week.

She globe hops from the tsunami relief efforts in American Samoa and Samoa to the earthquake response in Indonesia and lands at the ongoing typhoon response in the Philippines, Vietnam and Laos.
Tropical Storm Claudette

Florida – Tropical Storm Claudette made landfall in the Florida Panhandle this morning as the first tropical storm this year pounding some areas with 3 to 6 inches of rain. It is expected to move into southern Alabama
later today and into northeastern Mississippi tonight as it weakens.
ARC of Northwest Florida Chapter opened a shelter last night and had an overnight population of 9. Damage
assessment will begin today. State Coordinating Chapter (Orlando) facilitated calls with the affected chapters. State Coordinating Chapter (Birmingham) facilitated calls with potential affected.

Alabama - A tornado knocked down power lines and damaged homes on Sunday night when it touched down in Russell County. The Central Alabama Chapter and the Russell County Chapter deployed provided food and drinks to emergency responders as well as residents in the affected area.

Indiana – A tornado that touched down in Lawrence County destroyed and damaged several homes on Sunday evening. The Chapters opened a shelter for local area residents and is in communication with local the Emergency Management Agency.

Disaster Alert: Tornadoes in South-Central Alabama

Alabama - Several tornadoes touched down on Saturday and damaged several homes, turned over vehicles, and caused power outages and flooding throughout the south-central portion of the state. The affected areas were affected by snow storms on Sunday.
The chapters opened a warming site for affected area residents to warm up and eat snacks. They also provided mobile feeding, going door to door offering food to residents.
