Fires Leave 3 Families Homeless – Mt. Baker Red Cross Responds

WHATCOM/SKAGIT COUNTIES – The Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to two major fires on February 25 which destroyed one home and two apartment units.

Two families lost everything in the Everson apartment fire. The Red Cross provided both families with Client Assistance Cards which are used to purchase groceries, food, shoes, and seasonal clothing. They also received comfort kits containing personal hygiene items and toys for the children.

The second fire on February 25 was in Mount Vernon. A single family residence was destroyed when the homeowner attempted to thaw pipes under the house with a propane heater. Like those in Everson, the family received a Client Assistance Card and comfort kits from the Red Cross. They are also getting help from their neighbors, including temporary shelter in a vacant house for no charge.

“The community really poured out the support for the family,” said Dwayne Campbell, one of the Red Cross volunteers who responded to the scene. “They are helpful and well-liked in the neighborhood.”

Press Release: Red Cross Continues Helping Southern Minnesota Families Devastated by Floods – DISASTER UPDATE

October 6, 2010

Red Cross Continues Helping Southern Minnesota Families Devastated by Floods – DISASTER UPDATE

Rochester, MN October 6, 2010 – Red Cross volunteers continue to provide stability and hope for families in this time of chaos. Through mobile outreach into flood-affected areas, teams of caseworkers are connecting one-on-one with people in need and providing financial assistance for food, clothing, shelter, and health-related concerns. Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles are bringing food and distributing clean-up supplies in flood-ravaged neighborhoods. Since the flooding began, more than 379 Red Cross volunteers have been working to support the disaster-caused needs of families.

Currently, the Red Cross is providing approximately 700 meals a day in the communities of Hammond, Mazeppa, Pine Island and Zumbro Falls. “Every meal I’ve had [since the flood] has been in this tent. It gives us a chance to relax and talk to someone,” says LaVerne Radke of Hammond, whose home of 20 years was destroyed in the flood.

To date, the Red Cross has provided 242 overnight stays, served 12,560 meals and 12,047 snacks, and distributed 1,943 clean-up kits and 1,366 bulk items (e.g. garbage bags, gloves, bleach). The Red Cross will continue providing meals, snacks, and clean-up supplies as long as there is a need. The Red Cross opened eleven shelters across southern Minnesota due to the flooding. Those shelters are now all closed.

Volunteers are also helping with emergency medical needs and providing emotional support and counseling. The Red Cross is working with local partners to connect those in need with available community resources.

“Our volunteers are ready to meet with every person who was affected by this flood to determine how the Red Cross can assist them in rebuilding their lives,” says Melanie Tschida, Executive Director of the Southeast Minnesota Chapter of the American Red Cross. All Red Cross disaster relief is completely free to the recipients.

If you are in need of Red Cross services, please contact your local chapter. Local chapter information is available at 1-800-RED-CROSS or www.redcross.org.

Preliminary damage assessment reports indicate that 5,326 homes were affected by flooding in 17 counties. The Red Cross expects to spend between $610,000 and $891,000 to help people rebuild their lives following this disaster.

Minneapolis, MN, September 27, 2010 –The American Red Cross is lending a hand to those in need in southern Minnesota where record rainfall led to widespread flooding. Red Cross shelters, feeding, emotional support, and comfort kits have reached approximately 3,000 people. Nearly 200 Red Cross volunteers and staff have responded to this disaster.

The Red Cross has served 3,500 meals and snacks, and has also provided safe shelter for more than 100 people. Emergency shelters were opened in Austin, Elgin, Hollandale, Mazeppa, Millville, Owatonna, Pine Island, Rochester, Truman, Zumbrota and Zumbro Falls.

“From the beginning of this disaster we have provided shelter and hygiene kits for families that were forced to flee their homes,” says Melanie Tschida, Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Southeast Minnesota Regional Chapter.

During the coming days of recovery, the Red Cross will distribute hundreds more snacks, meals, and clean-up kits to families affected by the high waters.

Preliminary Red Cross damage assessment teams have found approximately 5,000 dwellings affected by this disaster. Of these, at least 59 are destroyed, rendering them permanently uninhabitable, and more than 200 have major damage that will require extensive repair.

“Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters in terms of human hardship and economic loss,” says Tschida. “We are doing everything we can to ensure that we’re reaching those who need Red Cross services.”
