Disaster Alert

Florida – An Arctic cold front brought below-freezing temperatures across the State of Florida. Combined low temperatures and wind chills are low enough to meet shelter-opening criteria in North, Central and South Florida.

Disaster Action Team Members from the North Treasure Coast Chapter supported two independent shelters for affected-area residents.

Disaster Action Team Members from the Martin County Chapter activated a cold weather shelter plan and opened 1 shelter for local residents.

Disaster Action Team Members from the Greater Palm Beach Chapter collaborated with local emergency management in opening 2 shelters for local residents.

Disaster Action Team Members from the Charlotte County Chapter collaborated with a partner organization in opening a shelter for residents in the affected area, which closed several hours later.

Disaster Action Team Members from the Polk County Chapter opened a shelter for local residents affected by cold.


Disaster Alert: Winter Storm in Massachusetts and Maine

Disaster Alert

Massachusetts – A winter storm, that dumped rain and snow throughout the state closed roads, damaged hundreds of homes and caused power outages to thousands of local residents on Friday.

The ARC of Massachusetts Bay Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team (DAT) and opened a shelter for the evacuees

The ARC of Northeast Massachusetts Chapter deployed DAT and opened a shelter for affected-area residents.

All other chapters provided mutual aid.

Maine – A winter storm caused power outages to thousands of local residents of York, Cumberland and Sagadahoc Counties on Friday.

The ARC of Southern Maine Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team (DAT), opened 2 shelters and provided Mass Care (MC) for residents in the affected area. They also worked closely with the local Emergency Management (EOC).

The Mid Coast Chapter deployed DAT, opened a shelter and provided MC for affected-area residents. They also worked closely with the local Emergency Management.

The State Emergency Operations Center was also staffed.


Disaster Alert: Severe Cold in Florida

Disaster Alert

Florida – Severe Cold Weather in Palm Beach and Martin Counties prompted Emergency Management to request shelters for local area residents in the affected areas yesterday.

Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter opened a shelter for the cold weather at request of County Emergency Operations Center. Martin County Chapter also opened a shelter and both chapters provided mass care to the residents.


Disaster Alert: Severe Weather in Florida

Disaster Alert

Florida – Cold weather in Palm Beach and Charlotte Counties prompted Emergency Management to request shelters for local area residents in the affected areas on Saturday.

The Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter opened two shelters for the affected-area residents and provided Mass Care (MC).

The Charlotte County Chapter opened a shelter to provide assistance to residents in the affected area.


Disaster Alert: Fridgid Temperatures in Florida

Florida – Palm Beach County had cold temperatures and strong winds last night and the National Weather Service has issued warnings that temperatures will fall below freezing tonight. At the request of local Emergency Management the chapter opened three shelters last night  and provided 150 meals to those affected.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear toured the Red Cross shelter in Calloway County, Ky., Tuesday, Feb. 3, almost a week after a devastating ice storm left tens of thousands of Kentuckians without power.

Jennifer Wilson, executive director of the Calloway County Red Cross chapter, said the shelter in Murray, Ky., served more than 130 clients at its peak. “The Red Cross has done an amazing job for the people of Kentucky,” Gov. Beshear said.

Calloway County Judge Executive Larry Elkins (right) said two-thirds of Calloway County was without electrical power a week after the ice storm. “We never expected it to happen to us,” Elkins said. “The Red Cross has been a valued partner in our crisis response and recovery.”

Tennessee:    Thousands of customers are without power with low temperatures.

Disaster Alerts: Wildfire, Transportation Incident, and Winter Weather

Disaster Alert

On January 19, the Red Cross began responding to the following events:

  • Texas – Wildfire: A brush fire in Hidalgo County destroyed several homes, damaged others and prompted the evacuation of over 100 homes. The Coastal Bend Chapter and South Texas Chapter opened a shelter for evacuees and provided individual assistance to fire victims.
  • Maryland – Transportation Incident: A multiple vehicle accident occurred on I-70, near the border of Washington and Frederick Counties. The Washington County Chapter and Frederick County Chapter opened a Warming and Communications Center and worked with Woodmen of the World to provide meals for dozens of travelers.

On January 20, the Red Cross began responding to the following event:

  • Florida – Cold Weather: Areas of the state experienced cold temperatures last night and these temperatures are expected to continue tonight. There were four American Red Cross Managed and Partner shelters open in the Martin County Chapter and Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter jurisdictions
