Disaster Alert: Cold Weather in Louisiana

Disaster Alert

Louisiana – Below average temperatures triggered the city of New Orleans Cold Weather Response Plan, which affected residents within St. Tammany Parish on Monday.

Disaster Action Team members from the Southeast Louisiana chapter were on the scene with a logistics vehicle and a shelter was placed on stand-by for affected-area residents.

Florida – Below average temperatures triggered the Cold Weather Response Plan and prompted the evacuation of residents within Polk, Palm Beach and Martin Counties on Sunday.

Disaster Action Team members from the Polk County Chapter opened shelters for residents within the affected area. Shelters closed hours later.

Disaster Action Team members from the Martin County Chapter opened a shelter and supported another for residents affected by the cold weather.

The ARC Greater Palm Beach Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team, opened a shelter and provided assistance as needed
for scores of shelter residents.


Disaster Alert: Cold Weather and Fire in Florida

December 14, 2010

Disaster Alert

Florida – Unseasonably low temperatures caused freezing that prompted the evacuation of affected residents throughout the central and southern portions of the state on Monday.

In an unrelated incident, a brush fire burned over a dozen acres in Martin County on Monday. High winds increased the potential for a possible evacuation.

Disaster Action Team members from chapters within the affected areas opened or supported a total of 12 shelters, placed several on stand-by, provided Mass Care and assisted hundreds of shelter residents overnight.

The Martin County Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team to provide canteen services for emergency responders and place a shelter on stand-by.


Disaster Alert: Winter Storm in Pennsylvania

Disaster Alert

Pennsylvania – Winter weather affected residents in several portions of the state on Thursday. Heavy snow is predicted across Pennsylvania on Friday.

The Berks County Chapter staffed the state Emergency Operations Center.

The Susquehanna Valley Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team and opened a shelter for dozens of affected-area residents.


Disaster Alert: Brush Fire and Cold Weather in Florida

February 26, 2010

Disaster Alert

Florida – A brush fire in Collier County burned 300 acres, damaged a home and threatened dozens of others in the affected area on Thursday. The Collier County Chapter deployed an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV), placed a shelter and a Disaster Action Team (DAT) on standby, and provided canteen services for affected-area residents and emergency responders.

In a separate incident, cold weather affected the residents of Palm Beach and Martin Counties on Thursday night.

The Martin County Chapter opened a shelter for residents within the affected area.

The ARC of Greater Palm Beach Chapter deployed a DAT, opened 2 shelters and provided Mass Care for over 100 shelter residents.

Florida – Walton County was affected by very cold temperatures yesterday.

The ARC of Northwest Florida Chapter opened a shelter for the affected-area residents and the chapter provided mass care.

Florida – Cold weather affected dozens of residents in Okaloosa, Escambia, Palm Beach and Martin Counties on Saturday.

The ARC of Northwest Florida Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team (DAT), opened a shelter, and provided material support to a community shelter.

The Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter deployed DAT, opened a shelter and provided MC for dozens of residents in the affected area.

The Martin County Chapter deployed DAT, opened a shelter and provided MC for local area residents.

Cold weather continues to affect residents in many parts of the United States over the weekend. Affected areas include New York, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and Missouri. Chapters have opened and/or supported shelters and warming centers, provided Mass Care (MC), placed other shelters on standby and identified local volunteers to support residents affected by the cold temperatures.

11 shelters were open across the country last night in Florida, New York, Southeast Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia. Florida was hardest hit, with 227 shelter residents overnight.

Residents without means to stay warm overnight are encouraged to go to a nearby shelter. Call your local chapter for the latest information on shelter openings.
