10.18.09 Jumpstart to Recovery Kits Arrive in American Samoa

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 — On Saturday, American Red Cross Jumpstart Kits arrived in American Samoa, an area that is recovering from the September 29 tsunami. The kit has items to help disaster victims with their short-term, immediate requirements, as well as aid for the long term. Each kit contains two blankets, a combination hand-crank radio, flashlight and cell phone charger, a mesh laundry bag, a first aid kit, note pad and pen, work gloves, face masks and a bath-in-a-bag all in one convenient, durable Red Cross backpack.

Disaster Alert: Earthquake in Indonesia

 Indonesia – A second quake shook the Indonesian island of Sumatra, one day after the first devastating earthquake left more than 500 dead and thousands more trapped. Today’s quake, measuring 6.6 in magnitude, struck early this morning approximately 180 miles from the epicenter of the first tremor.

Today, the Indonesian Red Cross has dispatched nearly 300 volunteers, including 45 doctors to the quake zone to offer first aid services, shelter and other assistance for those in need. Thousands of relief supplies, such as tarps, blankets and sarongs, are also being moved from warehouses in Jakarta to Padang.

The American Red Cross has committed to provide an initial $100,000 to support the Indonesian Red Cross and stands ready to provide additional support, should it be requested. More than 300 employees work for the American Red Cross in Indonesia where they:

· support long-term recovery programs related to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami

· help the local Red Cross and families prepare for future emergencies

Disaster Alert: Train Crash in Washington, DC

Washington, DC — Two 6 car WMATA Metro trains collided just after 5 p.m. EDT on June 22 resulting in a mass casualty situation. The National Capital Area chapter sent blankets, 5 Emergency Response Vehicles and several vans to provide meals, snacks and hydration to the emergency workers.  The chapter staffed DC Homeland Security Family Reunification center with FEMA and mental health workers were deployed.


Disaster Alert: Kentucky Winter Storms

Yesterday, the Red Cross responded to the following event:

  • Kentucky – Winter Storm: A winter storm yesterday caused sporadic power outages across the state.  The Red Cross opened 18 shelters last night and provided care and food for the shelter residents. They also provided 125 cots and 250 blankets to the local power company as they are sheltering workers; food is also being provided to those shelter residents. Freezing rain is expected to change to rain during the next 24 hours.
