Arizona – A winter storm and flooding affected several counties throughout the state and caused power outages to thousands of local residents on Saturday. Hundreds of residents evacuated from their homes. The Governor issued a State of Emergency for 10 counties. The Grand Canyon Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team (DAT), opened 4 shelters and provided Mass Care (MC) for shelter residents.

South Dakota – A winter storm that affected many areas throughout the state caused power outages to thousands of residents on Friday and Saturday. The Black Hills Area Chapter deployed a DAT, opened a shelter, provided MC and bulk distribution for the affected-area residents. All other chapters stand ready to provide assistance as needed to affected-area residents.

Local Volunteers Deploy to Georgia to Help with Flood Relief

 (PHOENIX) September 25, 2009 – Arizona Red Cross volunteers are deploying to Georgia to help people impacted by floods in the southeast. They will be processed today at 2:30 p.m. at the Phoenix Office located at 6135 N. Black Canyon Highway.

The volunteers will serve as client caseworkers. They will listen to the clients’ stories and review disaster assessments to determine their emergency needs.

Nearly 400 people spent the night in Red Cross shelters in Georgia and Tennessee. Nearly 200 Red Crossers and 18 mass mobile feeding vehicles are on the ground providing support. Cleaning supplies and comfort kits are being distributed and thousands of meals have been served to those affected by the flooding. Officials say early estimates show as many as 3,000 homes may be affected with damages estimated at $250 million.

Red Cross volunteers have to make a three week commitment when going on a national assignment. They often face physical hardships. Hardships in this operation include water disruption, power outages, air quality, and extreme heat/humidity.

Arizona – A wildfire continues burning over 773 acres. Over 700 residents are mandated to evacuate the area. The Grand Canyon chapter has opened a shelter and provided food and water for the affected residents.

Red Cross Opens Shelter Following Wildfire Evacuation

(PHOENIX) August 30, 2009 – The Red Cross is working with the Town of Payson and Gila County officials to open a shelter at Payson High School following an evacuation due to the Water Wheel Fire burning in the area. The Water Wheel fire burning in the Tonto National Forest has burned more than 150 acres.

Red Cross volunteers will be there to ensure evacuees have a safe place to sleep, food and emotional support until they can safely return home. So far, 100 people have registered at the shelter.

This wildfire is a reminder how important it is to Be Red Cross Ready which involves three simple steps:

Build a Kit: Pack three days of food, water and supplies in a bag. Also include medications, important documents, contact information, radio, first aid kit, map, money, tools, personal supplies, pet supplies.

Make a Plan: Establish responsibilities to each member of your family and work together as a team. Tell everyone in the household where emergency information and supplies are kept. Develop a family communication plan.

Disaster Alert: Power Outage in Arizona

Disaster Alert

Arizona – Powerful thunderstorms downed power lines and left hundreds of Maricopa County residents without power  and air conditioning since Tuesday. Temperatures rose in the triple-digits range. Chapters opened shelters and a cooling center. Water and food were provided to residents in the affected area.

Disaster Alert: Brush Fire in Arizona

Arizona – A large brush fire in Black Canyon City yesterday resulted in a partial highway closing. The Grand Canyon chapter opened a cooling center for responders and firefighters and provided water to the emergency workers and the affected travelers on the highway.


Disaster Alert: Arizona Transportation Incident

Arizona - On Friday, a bus crashed while carrying tourists to the Grand Canyon.  Mental Health volunteers were deployed to hospitals in both Arizona and Nevada to provide assistance to the victims.
