Armed with water, snacks, mental health and health services, a group of volunteers from all over Oklahoma are heading out to help people in their own communities. They started at 7 this morning and have been canvassing neighborhoods, delivering supplies to the neighborhoods of Moore.

Debbie Spaeth a Red Cross volunteer from Oklahoma City said that going out into the neighborhoods is very important right now, “people can’t get around, their cars are damaged and roads are closed so brining supplies and our services is a big help.” Debbie mentioned that not only cars are making it hard for people to get around, but broken wheelchairs and walkers have kept people in their homes, “they are so grateful when they see us.”

Debbie, who is friends with a woman whose child was lost in the elementary school that was hit by Monday’s tornado said that volunteering with the Red Cross is her way of dealing with the disaster-helping to make a difference in the lives of those in her community.

You can see by her smile, that she brightens the lives of others.

Red Cross disaster teams in Oklahoma have shelters, kitchens and emergency aid stations open where people can find a safe refuge, food and snacks, emotional support, health care services and information about what other help is available.

We also are operating shelters and supporting people affected by storms in Shawnee, Okla. and Texas. More than 380 people sought refuge in Red Cross and community shelters Tuesday night in Oklahoma and Texas.

Red Cross health services volunteers are working with the Medical Reserve Corps to visit the injured in local hospitals and offering services at the emergency aid stations like helping people replace prescriptions and other medical items. Many families have been affected by this horrific storm and Red Cross Spiritual Care Teams are working with partners to comfort those affected.

More than 200 disaster workers are traveling to the area and more supplies and equipment are on the way to help the people of Oklahoma. Almost 30 emergency response vehicles are there or enroute to distribute food, water and relief supplies to people in need. We have shipped comfort items containing personal toiletries and relief items including coolers, buckets, gloves, dust masks, trash bags, flashlights, tarps, shovels, rakes and blankets.

Working in cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention, two kitchens are beginning to prepare meals today. The kitchens are able to make tens of thousands of meals a day if needed. The Red Cross also has kitchen support and relief supply trailers on the way to help those forced from their homes and more will be deployed as needed.

In the coming days, Red Cross workers will meet with many affected families to help with emergency needs and connect people with other resources and tools to support their recovery.
