Disaster Alert: Wildfire in Arizona

June 6, 2011

Disaster Alert

Arizona – A large wildfire, now reported the 3rd largest wildfire in Arizona history, began last week near Alpine, Arizona in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Named the “Wallow Fire,” the blaze has grown exponentially, consuming nearly 200,000 acres of land. Gusty winds and low humidity prove to make fighting the fire extremely difficult. The Wallow Fire is currently 15 percent contained.

An evacuation was issued Thursday night for residents near Alpine. The Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter established a shelter in Lakeside, Arizona Thursday evening, offering emotional support, comfort kits, water, snacks and food provided by the Salvation Army and community partners. The shelter is still open to any residents who are in need. We are prepared for an expanded response for shelter expansion as other nearby areas are being threatened.
