Story: The Howard Family Finds Shelter After Wisconsin Floods

July 28, 2010

This account was written by Shannon Hext, a Red Cross worker for the Wisconsin chapter.

Wisconsin Floods 2010

The Howard family was cold and wet when they arrived at the Red Cross shelter, with only one thing on their minds—staying together.

Their wish was fulfilled at Glenn Hills Middle School, where they found cots, warm blankets and caring volunteers to provide shelter.

Just hours before, Nicole Howard and her seven kids had been enjoying the rain. They thought nothing of the few inches that covered the street outside, and a few of the kids even went out to play.

“When it started raining, we didn’t think it would get that bad. But things got worse fast,” Nicole remembers.

As the water rose in the street, so did Nicole’s concern. She called the kids in, and they started watching the water—first in their basement, then in the driveway. They started to measure the water by how high the level was on her sports utility vehicle parked outside.

“We just kept watching and it kept coming up,” she says. “I was so scared, I didn’t know what to do.”

When the water in the basement reached the top step of the basement steps, Nicole called her husband and asked him to come home. However, no matter what road he tried, he was unable to reach their stranded family through the flooded streets. Eventually, his car stalled from the water.

Press Release: American Red Cross Responds to Wisconsin Floods

July 28, 2010

Red Cross Services Update

July 27, 2010 – Even after days of disaster relief efforts, American Red Cross volunteers and staff are still assisting families affected by flooding across the state.

Hundreds of volunteers have distributed more than 2,700 clean up kits, which include a variety of clean-up items such as a squeegee, mop, bleach, gloves, and more. Red Cross workers have also served more than 4,000 meals at the shelter, distribution sites and on Emergency Response Vehicles traveling into damaged areas. Casework, Mental Health Services and Health Services volunteers have and continue to work with those affected to make sure their short-term and long-term needs are met.

One of many heartwarming examples of Red Cross compassion includes the Howard family who arrived cold and wet at the Glenn Hills Middle School shelter, with only one thing on their minds—staying together. Their wish was fulfilled, as they found cots, warm blankets and caring volunteers. “It’s been so nice, that we’ve been able to stay together. This was the best place for us,” Mrs. Howard says with a smile. “Reality is setting in. We lost so much, like our baby pictures in the basement. We’ll never get those back. But the most important thing was that we were able to stay together.”

Story: Helping Others, Helping Herself

July 26, 2010

Sandra Torres of Ripley, Mississippi came to Pike County, Kentucky to help others, but she started working with the Red Cross to help herself. “Eight years ago my husband was unexpectedly killed and I needed a way to fill my time;” Torres explained. “In the process I realized how helping others was helping me heal.”

Since 2002 Torres has served as a Disaster Relief volunteer and she estimates that her deployment to Pike County is her 35 relief operation assignment. Torres’ first introduction to the Red Cross came in 1998 when she took a CPR class. At that time, an instructor told her about other volunteer opportunities. It was four years later, after her husband’s death, when she first volunteered. She soon found herself in Corpus Christi, Texas responding to massive river flooding.

Sandra was a mass care volunteer on her first assignment and while she found that experience rewarding she wanted an opportunity to work with clients one-on-one. Torres, who is fluent in both Spanish and American Sign Language, is now a client caseworker.
