Story: “One contact leading to another”

tribal leader

Ruth Welsh, tribal elder for the Yavapai Indian Reservation is special guest at the all-staff meeting at Disaster Relief Operations headquarters.  Shannon Durham, mental health lead for the Grand Canyon Chapter initiated the connection with Ruth through the tradition of “one contact leading to another contact.”  Shannon invited Ruth to the meeting to “bless us, our work and give us peace.”  Ruth replied that she had to “wait until the Spirit moved her” so Ruth really did not know what to say at prayer.  At the meeting, Ruth offered the prayer in her native Yavapai language.  Prescott is the county seat of Yavapai County in Arizona.  Indigenous to Arizona, the Yavapai people were principal inhabitants at the time the state was annxed by the United States.
