Story: A Red Crosser is Served by Red Crossers

Story and photo by Edgar Maldonado

Mrs. Barbarra Peterson, a native of Newark, New Jersey, was a Red Cross manager for eight years at the former Morristown Chapter, now under the New Jersey Cross Road Red Cross.  She also contributed a further nine years of her life to the Red Cross mission as a volunteer.

Now in her 80’s, Mrs. Peterson lives at the Asbury Tower for elderly people in Monmouth.  When she got the call to evacuate, the first words out of her mouth where “are you taking me to a Red Cross Shelter?” She put her trust in the organization she contributed to for so long, and the Red Cross delivered on that trust, giving her safe shelter, warm meals and community over the more than two weeks since Sandy.
