American Red Cross Opens Shelter for Wildfire Evacuees

Hamilton, MT (September 10, 2012) - The American Red Cross of Montana is responding to a new wildfire in Ravalli County (Sawtooth Fire). On Monday afternoon, Red Cross staff and volunteers began organizing a response which includes the deployment of volunteers, shipment of shelter supplies, and the opening of a shelter. Efforts are being coordinated with government emergency officials and community partners.

The following shelter, operated by a team of trained Red Cross volunteers is open and available to house evacuees:

First Baptist Church, 354 Cooper Street, Hamilton

Anyone needing assistance should call 800-272-6668 and ask for the Red Cross Duty Officer.

Red Cross volunteers are providing emergency relief for families and individuals impacted by this wildfire. “We are providing shelter, food and comfort kits with basic hygiene products including soap, shampoo, and toothpaste to anyone staying in our shelters,” said Diane Wright, Red Cross spokesperson. “In addition to providing the basic needs, trained volunteers are on hand to provide emotional support for displaced residents during this very difficult time,” Wright said.

Donors can help people affected by this wildfire, as well as countless crises at home and around the world, by making a donation to support American Red Cross. Donations by check should be made payable to “American Red Cross of Montana” and sent to the American Red Cross of Montana at 1300 28th Street South, Great Falls, MT 59405. Those wishing to donate online should visit the website at www.montanaredcross.org.

If individuals have items like clothing and household goods they would like to donate, Red Cross asks that they consider instead donating these to a charity thrift store that is equipped to clean and store the items; often, the Red Cross works with charity partners in the community to connect disaster-affected residents with these resources. Or, consider having a garage sale and donating the proceeds to Red Cross.
