Around 10 p.m., April 14, 2012, an EF3 tornado struck the Oaklawn area in the southern portion of Wichita. In the coming days, Red Cross volunteers from Wichita and around the nation were busy helping people recover.
The following information shows our total service delivery in response to the tornado:
- Shelters opened: 1
- Shelter Overnight Stays: 111
- Bulk items (including shovels, rakes, gloves, trash bags): 1,371
- Comfort kits:
- Meals and Snacks served: 12,346
- Red Cross workers and volunteers on the ground: 98
The Red Cross Damage Assessment Team’s final assessment report shows there were 429 homes impacted by the storm in the Wichita area. Of those, 72 were destroyed; 56 had major damage; 98 had minor damage and 203 were affected. Statewide, the tornado impacted 493 homes.
