Disaster Update: Tornado in Oklahoma

Disaster Update

Oklahoma – The American Red Cross shelter in Norman, Oklahoma remains open at Whittier Recreation Center at 2000 W. Brooks. At 11:00 p.m. we had an estimated 100 people in the shelter and most of them are indicating they will be staying overnight. The Red Cross is providing food, beverages, cots and other necessity items to help those affected by the tornado.

The University of Oklahoma’s “The Big Event” on Saturday is canceled. Organizers of the event have donated more than 4,000 boxed lunches to the Red Cross to use tonight and tomorrow.

The Red Cross is also in contact with authorities in the Shawnee area and in Jackson County. In Jackson County, there are reports of home damage, and we are staying in touch with emergency management to determine if there are any shelter or feeding needs overnight.

The Red Cross will begin damage assessment in affected neighborhoods on Saturday once all the storms are clear and when it is safe to do so.
