Red Cross Assessing Damage from Severe Weather Overnight
And Organizing Disaster Response Efforts
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., January 23, 2012 — Volunteers with the American Red Cross Alabama Region are scouring the affected areas to see what levels of Red Cross disaster assistance may be needed. Red Cross disaster action teams will be on the ground to assess the damage and using Emergency Response Vehicles to distribute comfort kits, clean up kits, and snacks to families whose homes were affected by the severe weather.
Three shelters are open at the following locations:
- First Baptist Church of Center Point – 1945 Center Point Parkway, Center Point, AL 35215
- Clay Community Center – 6423 Clay-Palmerdale Road, Clay, AL
- Springville First Methodist Church – 6471 U.S. Highway 11, Springville, AL 35146
In the coming days we will be meeting with the families affected and will assist them with their immediate emergency needs based on the extent of the damage to their homes. Affected families should call (205) 439-7800 or their local Red Cross office for more information about Red Cross assistance.
Red Cross emergency assistance can include food, clothing, shelter, emotional support, and referrals; the level of assistance given is determined by caseworkers who meet with each family to assess their immediate emergency needs and provides assistance according to the extent of the damage to their home.
