RED CROSS HELPS STORM VICTIMS WITH SAFE SHELTER, WARM MEALS AND CLEANUP SUPPLIES

How you can help
Concord, NH, Friday, September 2, 2011 – The community of Transvale Acres in Conway
was especially hard hit with high winds and torrential flooding as a result of Tropical Storm
Irene. The winds toppled trees and power lines. Fast moving and high floodwaters filled homes
with mud and debris. Buildings were lifted off their foundations by the water and house trailers
were left leaning precariously against trees.

The American Red Cross arrived quickly on the scene to help the residents meet their immediate
needs and start their long-term recovery. An emergency Red Cross shelter was opened last
Tuesday at the Conway Recreation Center in Center Conway. It will remain open as long as
needed. Shelter residents are given a safe and dry place to sleep, food, shelter for their pets, and
comforting words from Red Cross volunteers who staff the shelter all day and night.

For the last two days, trained volunteers have been walking through the neighborhood assessing
the damage to each residence. Red Cross vehicles have been going from house to house handing
out water, snacks and cleanup kits containing a broom, mop, bucket, bleach and other cleaning
supplies.

For the next three days (Saturday through Monday), the Red Cross will provide warm meals on
site for the residents of Transvale Acres who were impacted by the storm. The meals will be
available from the large red and white Red Cross vehicle, which will be in the community for
lunch at about 11:30 and for dinner at about 4:30 through the holiday weekend. The food is
provided in partnership with three North Conway restaurants: McDonald’s, Merlino’s
Steakhouse and the Red Jacket Mountain View Resort.

How You Can Help
Although the Red Cross does not accept clothing or household goods, donations of clothes,
furniture and gift cards will be accepted by the Christ Episcopal Church on Route 16 and Pine
Street in North Conway, according to the Rev. Susan Buchanan. The church is open Saturday
and Tuesday-Friday next week from 10 am to 2 pm. For questions, contact the church office at
356-2062; phone messages are checked regularly.
