Red Cross Continues to Assist Families Affected by the Vacation Lodge Fire

Florida, June 28, 2011 – More than 24 hours after the massive Vacation Lodge fire in Kissimmee, American Red Cross disaster relief volunteers and staff continue to assist displaced families and individuals. The number of people served has reached 231. The Red Cross expects that number to grow.

Each family has been provided with a client assistance card pre-loaded with money to buy food, clothes and other necessities lost in the fire as well as funds to cover a month’s stay at an extended stay hotel. The Red Cross also gave the victims food and water at the Celebration High School shelter while it was open yesterday. The shelter closed at 9:00 p.m. Monday night.

The American Red Cross is asking anyone with donations of items to take them to the following organizations who are collecting on behalf of the victims:

Disaster Alert: Wildfire in New Mexico

Disaster Alert

New Mexico – A new/additional fire prompted the evacuation of 300 people on the border of Lincoln and Chavez Counties yesterday. Fire size is unconfirmed but media reports about 150 acres at 0% containment as of 11pm Eastern Time Tuesday.

The American Red Cross in Southeastern New Mexico opened a shelter and provided mass care for affected residents.

West Virginia – A small area of Richie County had a minor flash flood yesterday.

The Central West Virginia chapter sent a Disaster Action Team to evaluate the situation in the affected area and distributed cleanup kits to affected residents.

Disaster Alert: Wildfire in New Mexico

Disaster Alert

New Mexico – A fast moving wildfire destroyed more than 43, 000 acres, threatened homes and caused the evacuation of residents within the affected area of Los Alamos County on Monday.

The American Red Cross in New Mexico Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, staffed the county and state Emergency Operations Centers, opened two shelters and collaborated with other organizations to provide mass care for evacuees.


Disaster Alert: Severe Weather in Missouri/Illinois

Missouri / Illinois – Severe storms with straight-line winds damaged homes, left thousands of residents in both states without power and prompted evacuations on Monday.

Disaster Action Team members from the North Central Missouri Chapter opened a shelter and provided assistance as needed for the evacuees.

The Adams County Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team members, opened two shelters, communicated with Emergency Management and partnered with other organizations to provide mass care.

Disaster Action Team members from the Northeast Missouri Chapter supported a shelter for residents within the affected area.


Disaster Alert: Multi-Family Fire in Florida

Disaster Alert

Florida – A fire destroyed a hotel that caused the evacuation of over one hundred long-term residents in Osceola County since late-Sunday. Multiple injuries reported.

The ARC of Central Florida Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team, opened a shelter, provided mass care and conducted client casework. The shelter closed several hours later.
