Press Release: Flooding in Montana

Flooding in Montana

BOZEMAN, MT., May 31, 2011 – Although the sun is shining in most of Montana, the threat of rising rivers and streams still exists. The American Red Cross sheltered 220 evacuees at the Montana State University Petra Hall the evening of May 29. A shelter will remain open until evacuees are able to return safely home. Additionally, the Red Cross will open a shelter in Hays on Ft. Belknap starting this evening. Shelter supplies and staff are being sent to the Hays High School, 1 Thunderbolt Lane, this morning and the shelter will be open by 6 PM today.

The Red Cross has sent disaster assessment teams to several communities both in the south and central Montana to assess damage to homes. Red Cross, along with partner agencies continue to provide food and water to the Crow Nation as they work to recover from the flood that severely affected their community last week.

To date the Red Cross has recorded 1,844 overnight stays at their shelters since the beginning of this operation and have served more than 8,800 meals. There are a total of 78 Red Cross workers, volunteers from Montana and from other states, who have converged to assist Montana in the worst flooding in many years.
