Disaster Alert: Winter Storm in West Virginia and Maryland

Disaster Alert

West Virginia – The winter storm on Wednesday caused power outages that affected residents in Barbour and Taylor Counties on Thursday.

Disaster Action Team members from the North Central West Virginia Chapter opened two shelters for affected residents. Disaster Action Team members from the River Valley Chapter dispatched an Emergency Response Vehicle and opened a shelter for residents affected by the storm.

Maryland – As a result of heavy snow and strong winds on Wednesday, thousands of residents were Montgomery County on left without power in
Thursday.

The ARC of the National Capital Region Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team and opened a shelter for affected residents.


Disaster Alert: Winter Storm from Virginia to Maine

Disaster Alert

A winter storm dumped several inches of snow downing power lines, trees, leaving over half a stranding motorists and million customers without power.

Chapters conducted call downs with all community chapters in their region, placed them on stand-by and communicated with local emergency management.

The chapters continue to monitor the situation to provide assistance, if needed.


Disaster Alert: Explosion in New York

Disaster Alert

New York – A house exploded in the town of Horseheads resulting in three injuries and the evacuation of eight homes yesterday.

The Southern Tier chapter’s Disaster Action Team conducted a Disaster Assessment and provided Mass Care to the affected residents and first responders.


Disaster Alert: Strong Winds in Florida

Disaster Alert

Florida – Strong winds caused minor damage to ten homes and major damage to two others yesterday in Lake County.

The ARC of Central Florida chapter opened a shelter and provided meals and snacks.


Disaster Alert: Explosion in Ohio

Disaster Alert

Ohio – Over-pressurized natural gas lines in Lake County caused a house explosion, multiple fires and prompted the evacuation of residents within the affected area on Monday.

The Greater Cleveland chapter deployed Disaster Action Team, opened a shelter and provided assistance as needed to affected-area residents.


Disaster Alert: Tropical Cyclone Wilma in American Samoa

January 25, 2011

Disaster Alert

American Samoa – Tropical Cyclone Wilma dumped heavy rains and high winds on the island that damaged homes, affected others and left hundreds of residents without power on Monday.

Disaster Action Team members from the American Samoa Chapter provided bulk distribution and individual assistance to disaster victims.


Disaster Alert: Gas Leak in New York

Disaster Alert

New York – A gas leak in Ulster County prompted the evacuation of over 1,000 residents within the affected area on Thursday.

The Ulster County Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, opened a shelter and collaborated with other local organizations to provide Mass Care.

Disaster Alert: Winter Storms in Rhode Island, Texas, and Connecticut

Disaster Alert

Rhode Island – A winter storm dumped several inches of snow over much of the state leaving many residents without power. The State Emergency Operations Center is open.

The Emergency Operations Center is staffed with a Red Cross liaison. The Rhode Island Chapter is monitoring the situation and is ready to respond as needed.

Texas – A winter storm hit some parts of the state over the past few days.

The East Texas Piney Woods Chapter is supporting one open shelter and has four shelters on standby.

Connecticut – A winter storm dumped several inches of snow over much of the state causing power outages in many areas. The State Emergency Operations Center is open.

The Connecticut Chapter has identified a leadership team and volunteers are on standby. They are monitoring the situation and are ready to respond as needed.
