American Red Cross Responds to Today’s Storm Damage
Volunteers provide immediate assistance to families impacted by storms

St. Louis, Friday, December 31, 2010 – The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter dispatched three Damage Assessment Teams to Sunset Hills, St. Louis, and Fenton, MO, in response to today’s severe weather. Currently, teams are assessing damage to homes and providing immediate assistance to families on an individual basis. In addition, we are working with emergency response agencies in Franklin County to support and provide for affected families.

At this time, shelters are not required, however, if further assessment indicates a need, volunteers and pre-designated shelter sites are on standby. Until then, individuals seeking assistance may call our emergency hotline at 314.516.2700.

We will continue to monitor the situation and stay ahead of potential additional severe weather; as always the Red Cross stands ready 24/7 to respond to disasters.


Disaster Alert: Landslide in California

Disaster Alert

California – Ventura County Fire Department initiated evacuations for La Conchita as last week’s landslide area was showing ground movement. The evacuation is a precautionary measure, particularly with additional rainfall expected.

At this time, several families have evacuated, though the number is unknown by the fire department. Additional
evacuations are not expected at this time.

Ventura County Chapter

A Disaster Action Team was dispatched to La Conchita to assist the affected families and assess the situation. They have placed a shelter on standby and are maintaining close contact with the fire department to receive notification of any changes in the situation as they unfold.

The American Red Cross Greater NY Region Responds to Winter Blizzard

Sunday, December 27, 2010 – The Greater New York (GNY) Regional Chapters—Greater New York, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Shelter Island and Greenwich, Connecticut—are assisting residents affected by the fierce winter storm that blanketed the region. The storm covered New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Connecticut and the Lower Hudson Valley with between 12 and 24 inches of snow, disrupting rail and air travel and causing a number of power outages.

In advance of the storm, all Chapters within the GNY region immediately urged New Yorkers to stay safe by providing important winter storm safety tips on Chapter websites and issuing media releases. Additionally, in preparation for a seamless response effort, Chapters prepositioned emergency supplies and identified relief workers by functional area—mass care (feeding), shelter operations, health and mental health services, disaster assessment, logistics and public affairs—to assist as needed. Working with government agencies and community partners, a number of shelters were opened throughout the region to provide affected residents with a warm, safe place to stay, a hot meal and a shoulder to lean on.

Florida – A wildfire destroyed nearly two hundred acres, threatened dozens of structures and closed a roadway in Martin County on Monday.

The Martin County Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team members, dispatched 2 Chapter Emergency Response Vehicles and provided canteen services for dozens of emergency responders.


Disaster Alert: Cold Weather in Louisiana

Louisiana – Below average temperatures triggered the city of New Orleans Cold Weather Response Plan, which affected residents within St. Tammany Parish on Monday.

Disaster Action Team members from the Southeast Louisiana chapter were on the scene with a logistics vehicle and a shelter was placed on stand-by for affected-area residents.


Disaster Alert: Cold Weather in Florida

Disaster Alert

Florida – Below average temperatures triggered the Cold Weather Response Plan and prompted the evacuation of residents within Polk, Palm Beach and Martin Counties on Sunday.

Disaster Action Team members from the Polk County Chapter opened shelters for residents within the affected area. Shelters closed hours later.

Disaster Action Team members from the Martin County Chapter opened a shelter and supported another for residents affected by the cold weather.

The ARC Greater Palm Beach Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team, opened a shelter and provided assistance as needed
for scores of shelter residents.

North Carolina – A winter storm affected residents in Bladen County and left thousands without power on Sunday. The Lt. Governor declared a state of emergency.

The Highlands Chapter supported three county run shelters, staffed EOC, contacted emergency management and continued to monitor weather events. Shelters closed hours later.

A winter storm brought snow, high winds and coastal flooding throughout several portions of the states that stranded
travelers and left thousands of residents within the affected areas without power on Sunday. Governors declared a State of Emergency in Massachusetts and New Jersey.

All chapters within the impacted areas conducted call downs of volunteers and CEO’s were apprised.

The ARC of Northeastern New York Chapter staffed the state EOC to provide assistance as needed.

The ARC of Massachusetts Bay Chapter and placed shelters staffed the state EOC on stand-by for affected-area residents.

Disaster Action Team members from the ARC of Northern New Jersey Chapter collaborated with emergency management to open two shelters and provided Mass Care for scores of stranded travelers.

The Rhode Island Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team, staffed EOC, opened a shelter and placed other shelters on stand-by for affected-area residents. Disaster Action Team members from the Connecticut Chapter supported a shelter for residents affected by the storm

Winter Storm and Fire Response Make for Busy Night for Red Cross in Connecticut – Supporting Southington Shelter, Helping 28 People after Bridgeport and Manchester Fires, Responding to Multi-Family Fire in Enfield

Sunday, December 26, 2010 – The American Red Cross is responding to fires and supporting shelter operations tonight as a Nor ‘Easter bears down on Connecticut.

The Red Cross is providing temporary lodging to 14 people displaced by a fire this evening on Main Street in Bridgeport. Additional follow-up is scheduled for Monday.

The Red Cross is also helping 14 people in three families in Manchester, who were displaced by two separate fires on Eldridge Street. The Red Cross is providing temporary lodging and financial assistance for emergency clothing and food needs to one of the families. The other two families are receiving temporary lodging and will meet with caseworkers to assess further needs.

The Red Cross is also providing blankets and cots to a shelter open in Southington at Calendar House, 388 Pleasant Street in Southington. The shelter opened at 4pm and is operated by the town of Southington and the Southington Citizen Emergency Response Team with Red Cross support.

Additionally, the Red Cross has been contacted regarding a multi-family fire on High Street in Enfield. No additional details are available, but preliminary reports indicate at least 10 people are potentially affected.

“It’s a tough night out there for firefighters and responders,” said Red Cross spokesperson Paul Shipman. “Our hats are off to those responding. Our volunteers have reported very difficult driving conditions. We urge people to stay home if they don’t need to be on the roads, and we urge you to use caution at home with candles, fireplaces and space heaters.”

Disaster Update

California – The American Red Cross is on the scene and ready to assist families in Los Angeles County including residents of the La Cañada Flintridge-La Crescenta communities. The Red Cross is opening a shelter at:

“We are prepared to work with our community partners and open more shelters if needed,” said Rich Baenen, emergency services director for the San Gabriel Pomona Valley chapter of the American Red Cross. “We will be providing meals, personal toiletries and comfort. Our workers will be on hand to help individuals and families affected by these storms and meet their immediate disaster needs.”

The Red Cross recommends that as residents prepare to evacuate, they should bring important papers, medications, and some food for themselves and their pets.
