Disaster Alert

Texas – A forest fire in Walker and Trinity Counties destroyed several homes and prompted the evacuation of residents within the affected area on Thursday.

The Greater Houston Area Chapter deployed a Disaster Action Team, placed a shelter on standby and provided individual assistance to disaster victims.


Disaster Alert: Tornadoes in Virginia

Disaster Alert

Virginia – Tornadoes touched down in Henrico and Hanover Counties near Richmond yesterday downing trees and power lines and affecting several homes and businesses.

The Greater Richmond chapter completed a preliminary damage assessment. Chapter is working closely with local emergency managers to monitor the situation.

American Red Cross Responds to Apartment Fire in Connecticut

Waterbury, Connecticut – The American Red Cross is responding to a condominium complex on Waterville Road in Waterbury. The Red Cross is providing temporary lodging and financial assistance for emergency clothing and food needs to 16 people – 12 adults and four children – who were displaced by the early morning fire.

The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits, containing age and gender appropriate personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. Children’s’ kits include coloring supplies and a stuffed toy.

The comfort kits are assembled and donated by Clean Sweep Restoration Services of New England, LLC, an emergency clean-up and restoration services company located in Wallingford, Connecticut. Clean Sweep has been building and donating kits to the Red Cross in Connecticut for nearly a year, making them available for the Red Cross to use in the nearly 500 fires it responds to each year.

The Red Cross remains on the scene, providing canteen service to emergency responders and to residents who remained on scene during the response. The Red Cross has served beverages and snacks to approximately 75 people so far.

Red Cross Assisting Tuscaloosa Apartment Fire Victims

TUSCALOOSA, October 27, 2010 –The American Red Cross West Alabama Chapter is currently helping victims of an early morning apartment fire at the Graceland Apartment Complex in Tuscaloosa. The fire was reported at 3:30am on Wednesday and 20 units were affected. Of those units:

• 6 destroyed
• 6 suffered water damage
• 8 smoke damage and no utilities

Red Cross Volunteer and staff Disaster Action Team (DAT) members responded to the scene with the Emergency Response Vehicle to provide immediate help with items like comfort kits containing toiletries, food and clothing. Client assistance for the nearly 30 individuals affected by this fire is taking place at the Alberta Baptist Church (2210 University Blvd E, Tuscaloosa).

Three people were taken to DCH Regional Medical Center due to smoke inhalation.


Disaster Alert: Tornado in North Carolina

Disaster Alert

North Carolina – Several tornadoes touched down in Lincoln and Catawba counties yesterday damaging at least five homes and causing eleven injuries.

The Lincoln County Chapter opened one shelter that closed after midnight. Three reception centers opened at a local fire department and elementary schools. Disaster Assessment teams will be out this morning to assess additional damage and Disaster Action Teams will provide assistance as needed.

Tennessee – A tornado reportedly touched down in Hamilton county, yesterday damaging approximately ten homes and ten to fifteen units in an apartment complex.

The Greater Chattanooga Area Chapter sent out Disaster Assessment teams to gather information on damages and to see if a shelter was needed.


Disaster Alert: Strong Winds in Ohio

Ohio – Strong winds caused scattered power outages, damaged a couple of houses and barns yesterday in the Toledo region.

The Greater Toledo Area Chapter sent out a Disaster Action Team to assess damages.


Disaster Alert: Strong Winds/Tornado in Wisconsin

Disaster Alert

Wisconsin – Most of the state remains under a High Wind Warning after strong winds of up to 60 mph downed trees, power lines and left about 53,000 customers without power in Brown, Kewaunee, Oconto, Kenosha, Racine Counties yesterday. The Brown county EOC is at full activation.

An EF-1 tornado reportedly touched down in Racine and Kenosha counties damaging some homes, businesses and injuring two people.

The Southeastern Wisconsin and Badger Chapters sent out a Disaster Action Team to assess damages.

Lakeland chapter representatives were sent to the Kewaunee and Brown County Emergency Operations Center (EOC’s).

Chapters will notify the Disaster Operations Center of any services they may provide.


Disaster Alert: Severe Weather/Tornado in Illinois

Disaster Alert

Illinois – Much of the Chicago area was affected by strong winds and rain resulting in flight cancellations. Early estimates show four homes affected. The city of Chicago and Cook County Emergency Operations Centers (EOC) were activated.

The ARC of Greater Chicago sent a Disaster Action Team to assess the situation. Chapter has staff and shelters on standby.


Disaster Alert: Severe Weather in Alabama

Disaster Alert

Alabama – Severe storms damaged homes, downed power lines and affected residents in several counties throughout the state on Monday.

The DeKalb County Chapter deployed Disaster Action Teams, dispatched an Emergency Response Vehicle, staffed the Incident Command Post and provided canteen services to affected-area residents and emergency responders.

Other chapters continue to monitor the situation and will provide assistance to residents, if necessary.
