Story: Salvaged from the Flood Water

September 29, 2010

Red Cross workers Jason Viana and Anne Florenzano wrote the story below.

Mary Eversman and Claire Smith

One of the brightest spots in Red Cross May Eversman’s day came when Millville resident Claire Smith came in for dinner and recognized a photo that had been salvaged from the flood waters. The black and white photo of a woman in front of Niagara Falls was dated 1924 on the back and had been brought to the Red Cross site earlier in the day in hopes that it might find its way back to its rightful owner.

As Eversman passed the photo around, Smith’s eyes lit up as she recognized her great grandmother. “Oh my god!” exclaimed Smith, “That’s her, I know her! That’s my great grandmother!” The joy and relief was evident in her voice and expression as she thanked Eversman repeatedly for finding the picture. The satisfaction in Eversman’s face was just as clear. “I’m just glad it found its rightful home,” Eversman said. “It’s a great thing to see in the middle of all this.” The photo had floated some three miles from Smith’s residence and was found in an eddy near the bridge in Millville.

Disaster Update: San Bruno Explosion

September 29, 2010

Disaster Update

On September 9, a main gas line ruptured and exploded igniting a San Bruno neighborhood, displacing hundreds of residents and causing several injuries and deaths.

The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter has been assisting the affected residents, providing shelter, food and hydration, crisis counseling, health services and additional assistance to help with their recovery.

As of September 27, the Red Cross has met with and registered more than 383 families (more than 1,000 individuals) affected by the fire. These families are receiving assistance from the Red Cross to find alternative housing, replace lost items and create long-term recovery plans. Red Cross volunteers continue to conduct follow-up outreach to the affected families to discuss outstanding needs and initiate a long-term recovery process, ensuring that everyone has the assistance and support they require in the coming months.

Ongoing casework with the affected families is also taking place at the San Bruno Recovery Center, located at 900 Cherry Avenue, Suite 332, San Bruno. The San Bruno Recovery Center will serve as the location for long-term recovery, assistance and services for all affected residents of the San Bruno Fire. Along with the Red Cross, several nonprofit and government agencies are co-located at the San Bruno Recovery Center.

Throughout this response, the Red Cross has worked to encourage partnering, collaboration and coordination, supporting the City of San Bruno and the Coordinated Assistance Network (CAN). The Red Cross will continue to use our resources to help with the longer-term recovery concerns in San Bruno, such as housing, health issues and other disaster recovery needs.

At the site of the explosion, debris removal of the destroyed and damaged homes continues. Red Cross volunteers remain in the affected neighborhood to provide snacks, hydration and emotional support to the families who have returned home, as well as first responders, workers and investigators.

Red Cross shelters, feeding, emotional support, and comfort kits have reached approximately 3,000 people. Nearly 200 Red Cross volunteers and staff have responded to this disaster.

The Red Cross has served 3,500 meals and snacks, and has also provided safe shelter for more than 100 people. Emergency shelters were opened in Austin, Elgin, Hollandale, Mazeppa, Millville, Owatonna, Pine Island, Rochester, Truman, Zumbrota and Zumbro Falls.

During the coming days of recovery, the Red Cross will distribute hundreds more snacks, meals, and clean-up kits to families affected by the high waters.

Preliminary Red Cross damage assessment teams have found approximately 5,000 dwellings affected by this disaster. Of these, at least 59 are destroyed, rendering them permanently uninhabitable, and more than 200 have major damage that will require extensive repair.
