Press Release: Red Cross To Open Shelter, Clean Up Kits Now Available

Red Cross To Open Shelter, Clean Up Kits Now Available

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA, July 28, 2010 – The Grant Wood Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is opening an emergency shelter on Thursday and Friday at the Earlville Elementary School, 213 Stow Street, Earlville, to help residents impacted by the flood by offering a safe place to stay, a hot meal, minor first aid, and a shoulder to lean on. The shelter will open at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

With RAGBRAI coming through the area, residents who have elected to stay in hotels while displaced from their homes may now need overnight shelter. The Red Cross shelter is only for residents displaced by flooding, not RAGBRAI riders.

Red Cross emergency response vehicles are providing food, bottled water and clean up kits today in Manchester, Lake Delhi, Monticello and Olin.

The Red Cross is also offering clean up kits beginning this afternoon in the following locations:

Edgewood City Hall, 203 West Union Street, Edgewood

Hopkinton City Hall, 115 Southwest 1st Street, Hopkinton

Lake Delhi Area, Barb DeKlotz home, 20796 262nd St, Delhi

Manchester Community Services Building, 601 Grant Street, Manchester

Independence Fire Department, 113 4th Ave SE, Independence

Monticello City Hall, 200 East 1st Street, Monticello

As of Tuesday, July 27, the Red Cross has provided approximately 1,400 meals and snacks and 2,900 bottles of water to residents in Buchanan, Delaware and Jones counties affected by flooding.
