Red Cross Offers Clean Up Kits to Residents Affected by Flooding

FARMINGTON, CONN., March 31, 2010 – The American Red Cross Connecticut Chapter will make clean up kits available to families affected by flooding in southeastern Connecticut. The kits will be available at the Chapter’s Waterford office, at 200 Boston Post Road between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday or until the Chapter’s supply is exhausted. People in need of the kits should call the office at (860) 447-3249 to confirm availability of the kits.

“We will make the kits available on a first-come, first-served basis,” said Sue Rochester Bolen, Senior Director, Emergency Services, for the Connecticut Chapter. “The kits can be helpful in beginning to clean spaces that have been affected by flooding.”

Rochester Bolen said the kits contain a mop, broom, gloves, trash bags, a pail, as well as liquid cleaner or bleach.

The Red Cross operated several shelters in recent days, providing a safe, warm place for people displaced by flooding. As the rain ends and the waters begin to recede, many are returning home to begin clean up. “We will continue to operate shelters in communities that need us,” Rochester Bolen said. “And we will have teams assessing damage in affected towns so that we can better understand who might need additional help.”

As of noon on Wednesday, the Red Cross had shelters open in Jewett City, at the Griswold Fire Department on Voluntown Road; in Norwich, at the Rose City Senior Center, at 8 Mahan Drive; and in Pawcatuck at Stonington High School, at 176 South Broad Street.

American Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge, a gift made possible by generous donations and the work of volunteers. For more information and to learn how you can help, visit www.ctredcross.org.
