TRIAD, March 30, 2010 – Your Red Cross remains on the scene throughout High Point and Davidson County providing food, shelter and counseling to those affected by the aftermath of the devastating tornadoes. We are coordinating with local emergency officials and our community partners to best serve those in need.
An emergency shelter is open at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 279 Eastchester Drive in High Point, to help residents impacted by the storm by offering a safe place to stay, a hot meal, minor first aid, and a shoulder to lean on. Last night, we sheltered 5 individuals affected by the storms. As a result of damage assessment and best serving our client’s needs, this shelter will close at Noon, Wednesday, March 31.
Red Cross volunteers have completed damage assessment in these impacted areas. Caseworkers will meet with families at the shelter and at the High Point-Thomasville Chapter, located at 815 Phillips Avenue starting at 1pm today.
Volunteers in Red Cross mobile response vehicles are making their way throughout the affected communities so that families can get snacks, meals and water. The Red Cross makes sure that while debris removal is happening, everyone is fed and hydrated. To date, your Red Cross has served 550 snacks and 100 meals. Special thanks to High Point University, the Salvation Army and Lowe’s Home Improvement Center and Food Lion, Carter Brothers, BBQ Joe’s, Mrs. Winters and many others for their in-kind donations of food for those affected by this disaster.
Tornadoes often create such havoc that families don’t have the simplest of items to begin cleaning up their homes, so the Red Cross is making our way through damaged neighborhoods to distribute cleaning kits, which include work gloves, trash bags, tarps, rakes and more.
Many people are understandably upset by the tornado, so we’ve activated our Red Cross Disaster Mental Health team to help. This volunteer team is working to let families know what to expect physically and emotionally in the days ahead. If you were impacted by the storm and would like to speak with a Red Cross counselor, please contact the High Point – Thomasville chapter at 885-9121.
Individual preparedness is the key to effectively responding to a disaster. We urge everyone to Be Red Cross Ready for tornadoes and other emergencies by getting a kit, making a plan, and staying informed.
