- Nearly 800,000 people are believed to have been affected by the two devastating earthquakes last week in West Sumatra
- According to government officials (as of Oct. 6):
- 704 people have died
- 1,500 people are injured
- 343 people are missing
- 200,000 houses are damaged or destroyed
- 736 families have been displaced
- Priority needs remain health care, clean water, food and tents
- The Indonesian Red Cross (also known as Palang Merah Indonesia or PMI) has set up five health centers and 21 mobile clinics to treat injuries.
- More than 700 people visit the clinics each day
- To date, PMI has deployed 326 volunteers to five districts, where they are:
- Searching for and evacuating the trapped
- Supporting medical action teams
- Running a field kitchen to feed the survivors and rescue crews
- Installing water and sanitation equipment
- Distributing tarps, blankets, sleeping mats, food and water
- Helping to reconnect separated families using free satellite phones
- The American Red Cross has contributed an $500,000 as well as three employees, already working in Indonesia to support these local relief efforts
