  • Nearly 800,000 people are believed to have been affected by the two devastating earthquakes last week in West Sumatra
  • According to government officials (as of Oct. 6):
    • 704 people have died
    • 1,500 people are injured
    • 343 people are missing
    • 200,000 houses are damaged or destroyed
    • 736 families have been displaced
  • Priority needs remain health care, clean water, food and tents
  • The Indonesian Red Cross (also known as Palang Merah Indonesia or PMI) has set up five health centers and 21 mobile clinics to treat injuries.
    • More than 700 people visit the clinics each day
  • To date, PMI has deployed 326 volunteers to five districts, where they are:
    • Searching for and evacuating the trapped
    • Supporting medical action teams
    • Running a field kitchen to feed the survivors and rescue crews
    • Installing water and sanitation equipment
    • Distributing tarps, blankets, sleeping mats, food and water
    • Helping to reconnect separated families using free satellite phones
  • The American Red Cross has contributed an $500,000 as well as three employees, already working in Indonesia to support these local relief efforts
