May 27, 2009

Disaster Alert

Texas – Thousands of tires at an abandoned recycling facility in the southern part of Hawkins City caught fire at about 11:30 pm on Monday night. Toxic smoke from the massive tire fire caused an evacuation of residents and school closures yesterday. The Hawkins Fire Department is monitoring the fire while the tires burn out on theiro own.  It is expected to burn for up to a week. About 400 people in the town of 1,500 had been cleared out by midmorning Tuesday. Two shelters are on standby and an Emergency Response Vehicle team is on site in Hawkins providing rehab for the fire department.

American Red Cross Continues to Assist Alaskans Displaced by Flooding

The American Red Cross of Alaska continues to serve Alaskans affected by flooding of the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers. Red Cross disaster response volunteers remain in the community of Eagle and are assisting with damage assessment and shelter support. The Red Cross is also working with state and community officials and Voluntary Agencies Active in Disaster (VOAD) to provide services in Bethel for those evacuated from Akiak and Kwethluk, and in Fairbanks for those evacuated from Stevens Village, Beaver, and Tanana.

“The American Red Cross of Alaska continues to coordinate with emergency officials and local community partners to help residents as needs arise,” said Michelle Houlihan, CEO. “Volunteers are on site throughout the affected region providing disaster assessment, feeding, sheltering and emotional support.” Once damage assessments are complete, the Red Cross can assist families with emergency needs including food, clothing, infant needs, and basic household needs.

List yourself or a loved one as Safe & Well

The Red Cross is encouraging evacuees to register their status on the Red Cross Safe and Well website: https://disastersafe.redcross.org. The website provides a way for those affected by disaster to register themselves as “safe and well.” Concerned family and friends can then visit the website and search for the status of their loved ones.

All residents in the affected areas may utilize services being provided by American Red Cross at no cost.
